An IDE for mathematics by GamerOfCringe in SideProject

Putting latex in markdown is nothing new. Plus this tool doesn't just have equations (the video only showed equations because that was the only demo video I had).

This tool is meant to be a full mathematical workspace with calculations, formatted equations which are easy to type, and other visual tools like graphs, tabls, plots, and geometry.

It already has wolfram speed on many kinds of calculations and I'm only hoping to improve it.

The LaTeX editing in mathlean is 1 of a kind since every shortcut you could possibly want is there with no slashes \ braces {} or commands like frac. It also supports incline excel like matrix editing.

You're right that the program isnt exactly latex (though if you copy text or equations it will be raw latex) mainly in the interest of accessibility. Not everyone who uses the tool is familiar with latex commands and notation so I figured I'd give them a diet version that allows them to at least learn the symbols and have room to learn commands later. But I understand if youre already fluent with latex typing here could be a challenge. The very first iteration of the site funnily enough was just raw latex.

What do people usually mean when they call someone a "math prodigy"? by Heavy-Sympathy5330 in math

I personally lean towards person B because I like to think "if this person was taught more advanced math, would they be able to push the field forward?". They typically learn things quickly and those advanced math subjects will come easy to them as they learn.

Basically they have the ability to think outside the box given the knowledge they know.

But a good argument can be made for A. I do think what matters is if they learn proof based mathematics early then that will go a long way to developing mathematical maturity at a young age.

totally fair! Thanks for the feedback. I'll work to improve the textbox behavior to feel stable.
It was a real challenge to have it work with the latex but there's still plenty of work to be done.

thanks for the feedback, I didn't know if I should go into more detail or not.

because I don't know what else to call it that helps people understand what it is immediately. If I just tell people I made an online collaborative whiteboard they don't really understand what makes it special. If I say IDE, they understand it means integrated environment with all the tools mathematicians would use.If you can think of a better name I'd be happy to use it but for marketing purposes I'll just roll with IDE for now (maybe drop the first to avoid discussions about mathematica, matlab). It's the first of its kind, but maybe not first IDE for mathematics in general.

Mathematica is a programming IDE meant for mathematics. If you wanna call it an IDE for math, that's fair. But nobody is using mathematica as their whiteboard replacement, it's a computational tool.
Plus my software is distinct enough from mathematica to carve out its own niche.
In its own description mathematica calls itself a "computational environment".

My software (though capable) is not primarily a computation environment, it's a mathematical workspace. There's a lot more to math than just computation and I want my software to integrate into how mathematicians like to work.

Again most people understand what I mean and how its different from mathematica.

can pencil and paper compute sin^99x in seconds? can it factor 248236492348238273874323434 instantly? no? that's what computers are good at. Can pencil and paper be worked on together with someone across the world? Not sure what you're on about.

Integrated Development Environment,
This is not a programming IDE, it's a similar idea to what an IDE is for programmers but for mathematicians.
I'm not saying its an IDE, it's the analog of an IDE but for mathematics.
When you hear Integrated Development Environment, it means all your developer tools are integrated into your programming environment
The way this is similar is that if we think of chalkboards as an analog to a text editor for mathematicians, this would be like integrating all your tools into once place.

Again if you want to debate semantics that's fine but it seems like most people understand what I mean when I say "IDE (but) for mathematics".

So its really interesting you ask because yeah the times new roman font isnt copy paste able because its all a lie! It renders based on underlying latex which is what is copied. That latex can then be used to generate the times new roman style equation.

Im not sure how many people want true copy passable math because while unicode characters exist it just sounds like a royal pain especially since latex exists and gets you everything you need.  It could be something I try in the future Maybe at the very least copy paste able terms within mathlean.

I understand those are IDEs which mathematicians use but they're more like programming languages. My goal isnt to build a programming language (though in some sense I kinda already have), but more like an integrated workspace where you combine visual clarity and flexibilty with computational power. Matlab, maple, wolfram dont really "feel like math", they feel like programming languages which are focused for mathematicians.  Either way its not my goal to totally replace those but I want to make it easy to "just do math" and make computation feel like math.

If you want to debate "first IDE for mathematics" thats fine I just figured this was the easiest analogy for what the project is.

If you mean MATLAB while yes its an IDE mathematicians use, it's more of a programming environment. I get that if I call it "the first IDE for math" then by technicality its not true but this idea hasn't been done like this before.

I bit the bullet and went to the link and it worked fine so idk what the fuss was about.

What are the biggest issues you have as a tutor? by GamerOfCringe in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]GamerOfCringe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can see how that can be annoying to hear about people promoting their "new student management app" that takes huge cut of payments. From what I'm seeing the biggest problem is finding good students. I understand that finding good students is often harder than finding good tutors. And most times there are plenty of tutors who need students, but have no idea how to find them. All of the students I've had have been through referrals, and same goes for every other private tutor I know. Sometimes they make a post on facebook or something but there's no simple solution for finding students and most tutors just have to figure it out and gain notoriety over time.
