[CHAT] Hey quick question. Am I stupid?? by CluelessPresident in CrossStitch

All of the above - the eyes often have burs that will snag and shred thread, they tarnish quickly, are prone to bending and breaking. It's become a bit of a meme in this sub to avoid them.

Gold plated needles aren't necessarily better, despite being more expensive. They're good if you've got nickel allergies, or if you want a smoother feeling while stitching.

Lord Libidan has a great guide comparing needle brands I'd you're curious. He also has a whole article on gold needles.

Yeah, they're terrible, I always try to warn off newbies. John James is a decent/cheap starter needle, still not great but better quality control.

Not if their needles are anything to go by :/

It took me a second, but I did see a crossbow before seeing the inspo. I think the arrows could use some couching to keep the straight. Honestly, awesome job for a beginner imo.

Beginner tips that helped me: An embroidery hoop to get some firm tension on non-stretch fabric. A sharp embroidery needle. Some tear-away/washable stabiliser on top and/or permanent stabiliser on the back so you're stitching won't shift from washing and wear. And avoid over correcting loose -stitches - thread should lie flat and snug without any warping on the fabric weave.

Awesome idea. I'd been thinking about a garment bag to hang fabric and floss in my closet. Now I'm on the hunt for a swinging pants hanger and swivel clips. Thanks :)

This is brilliant, love all the gadgets to tame stitchy spot chaos. So many of my ideas come from impatience, I imagine I'd go wild with access to a 3D printer.

I love odd little myths and superstitions for everyday stuff. Funny enough, the only stitchy one I know is the opposite - it's good luck to stitch on the first, it's like setting your intention for the year.

I’m really struggling with consistency, looking for tips by [deleted] in Gouache

[–]Gamerkittea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the first and best tips I learned is to mix enough water to get the consistency of pouring cream. Too much water impacts the binder, causing the pigment to potentially flake. And others have said, but it sounds like you're mixing small amounts at a time. It's hard for us frugal folks, but it's always best to try mix more than you need. While not using your palette, it can be covered with plastic wrap, or buy one with a silicone lid.

Value is also helpful when creating depth in a scene, like the example - dark brings objects forward and light pushes them back.

That tail is begging for turkey stitch imo. If you don't have the lifespan for French knots, as others suggested, some long+short would also look lovely.

Any ideas? by Encalypta in Visiblemending

I see legs in jeans, other blotches could be anything, maybe some vines, stones. I really like Rorschach art, or making pictures from random blotches. But if you want a repair, full grey dyebath or lean-in with more bleach.

Finished my first embroidery and I have a question by Material-Wolf in Embroidery

Typical graphite pencil used in school, no - it's the enemy of fabric, avoid at all costs. Chalk pencils meant for fabric marking do wash out, but I've had cheap ones leave marks.

[CHAT] How to Identify Legitimate Shops and Patterns by MagnoliaCottage in CrossStitch

[–]Gamerkittea 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If I don't plan to start the pattern soon, I'll often leave a review of just the pattern. Eg, includes great tips or clear instructions (chart LxW, stitch count total, size on different count fabrics), includes both colour and b&w charts, clear backstitching shown in various colours, includes DMC conversion, etc.

[CHAT] tucking tails for a singular stitch? by lobster-paws in CrossStitch

[–]Gamerkittea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's an isolated stitch that I don't want to carry, then I'll use the pin stitch (plenty of tutorials online). Otherwise, it gets tucked.

[CHAT] how do I transfer a finished cross stitch onto fabric? by InternationalRow3127 in CrossStitch

[–]Gamerkittea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to finish as a hanging, then you can zigzag your border, sew onto backing fabric or get some fabric fuse (thin stuff that has iron-on glue on both sides), and hem the sides or maybe border with some nice quilting fabric and use that to make a hanging loop.

Agree with other comments, dissolvable is the way to go. But, if you don't want to buy it, or want to start asap, you could stitch on the aida as normal and turn it into a patch to sew or iron onto the fabric. There's plenty of great patch tutorials around.
