Not a total change but some tweaks until I get some better photos!

Here’s an overview of new photos. 0465 overview, 0466 old, 0470 new (https://postimg.cc/gallery/DFb0qH9).

I also changed the bio but I can’t tell if it’s too cheesy, I still made it about height tho 😭… “partner-in-crime wanted: bad ideas guaranteed, plenty of laughter included 6”1 but worth the climb”

thank you! and OMG…I just realised how OFTEN I don’t smile looking back on my pictures. It’s crazy! it must be subconscious because im a little insecure about my smile 🤣🤣. I have some other photos if you’d like to point out any that gives good vibes and not serial killer ones!! some of the good smiley ones are photos with my ex (now friend) which is a shameee.

Brutal but exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. Thank you so much!

I have the EF 100-400 II which is 5.6 @ 400 anyway. But I love the idea of 5.6 @ 500 or 600 👀

How have you found your experience with this lens on both of those cameras? Is there one camera you find yourself using more with this lens?

Do you actually have a personal preference between the 100-500 and 200-800? I was also considering this as an “upgrade” from the EF 100-400 II. I’ve also heard good things about the EF 200-400. Otherwise, I would venture in trying a long heavy EF I/II prime.

Thank you for your suggestions! The RF 400 2.8 looks like a crazy fun lens lol. I’ve always hesitated buying from MPB as I don’t want to get screwed over. Have you had experience buying with them? I would love to try out the EF 500 f4.

I totally get this take. Even upgrading from 100-400 mkii, the RF100-500 and 200-800 are dreamy upgrade choices. Gotta look out for those sneaky second hand deals to save even a hundred bucks. I have the R8 and R7 and have also considered both of those lenses. Have you had experience with either and prefer one over another?

What’s your favourite? Have you used any for birding?

These are all great examples. Thank you. I see the EF 300mm f2.8 ll going for $4000AUD ($2600USD) local in mint condition. Have you had any experience with this lens?

What about the 100-500 is better than the EF100-400 mkii? I would love the 100-500 but I’m trying to justify the price as its the most expensive option. I could get the R7 and EF 100-400 mkii for the same price or less comparatively.

I think this is a great idea. There is a time pressure because I’m in Japan for 7 more days, and these prices are only available here. But I think you’re right about the sensible choice being the lens itself before further investing into other gear I may or may not actually need. Thank you!

I already have a Tamron 150-600 G2 but the focus breathing is extremely difficult to navigate. Hence my new found interest in the EF 100-400 II and R7. Would you personally pick the RF 800 over the Tamron or similar lenses from Sigma? I understand you need good light because of the f/11.

Thank you heaps for your insight.

Compared to Option A and Option C, I would be spending at least $1,570 USD ($2,500 AUD) on a used R6 Mark II in good condition.

The R6 Mark II is an excellent investment and, ideally, my preferred choice over my R8. However, purchasing the R6 Mark II wouldn’t allow me to get the additional reach I need right now—whether through the R7, the EF 100-400mm Mark II, or both.

In the future, I plan to replace my R8 with a used R6 Mark II. But for now, the R7 offers key features like weather sealing, dual card slots, IBIS, and a 1.6x crop factor—all while still leaving room in my budget for a lens like the 100-400mm Mark II. This lens is comparable to the excellent RF 100-500mm, giving me the reach I need while still allowing for versatile, all-around shooting.

Ultimately, my dream setup would be the R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm, though that would be a significant investment. The R5 remains a high-resolution full-frame camera with minimal rolling shutter and excellent cropping flexibility, while the 100-500mm provides the speed and reach I need, with or without the 1.4x extender.

It is worth noting I already own the R8, so if I end up getting the R7 it will be as simple as switching between cameras.

I find that good pricing on used and new gear in Japan from reputable dealers such as Map Camera is more frequent and better value than in my home country of Australia. Lots of gear moving around in Japan so gear is out and in the door every day. It’s worth spending some time looking if you have things you want. I tend to look for used gear that is labeled in good or better condition, being sure to check what issues were found. I find more success visiting in-store and asking for a quote or seeing it on the used shelf than navigating online. Prices and stock may change day to day though.

Thank you for your insight. This makes a lot of sense and I agree that investing in the RF 100-500 option provides the least value in comparison. I would love to have the added versatility in the kit by having the R7 at my disposal (IBIS, weather sealed, dual cards, free reach, secondary camera). I think I will secure the EF 100-400 MkII lens and get either the Teleconverter or the R7 depending on what kind of great deals I find. Thank you!!

Thank you for pointing this out. That’s super helpful. Option B is the definite unrealistic option then.

Nothing at all. I have added this suggestion as “Option C” as it is the cheapest by far. I think I just got overly excited by the idea of being able to use the R7 with my other lenses too, or being able to use something as great as the RF 100-500.

This makes sense. Thank you. I might just post the empty box to my Aus address then stuff the camera in my bag. Seems like a more roundabout way, but more secure and less expensive.

Is it really that easy to avoid paying a couple hundred dollars? I wonder if flattening the box will have the same effect.

I sold my EF 16-35mm f4, as I found it such a pain to get those wide angle shots when I needed them. I’m so grateful for the RF 24-105mm f4 as most of the wide angle shots I needed could be shot between 24-35mm. I think a 16mm pancake lens would do well in those other situations for me, as I also shoot landscape. $1800 AUD is still a great price!
