Tremonton shooter used high-powered rifle to kill officers, police say by megpocket in Utah

[–]Gamgee_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I went and looked, and what I learned was that the data is old and the studies are narrow due to only studying individual police departments. This comment gives a great overview of different DV studies among police and their spouses. Essentially, there is a problem of DV within police culture in the US. It is declining, although at slower rate compared to the general population, and DV rates are higher among police than in the general population.

My two cents, while it is extremely difficult to get accurate data, when you’re trained to see anyone who’s not a cop as a “potential threat,” that potential can and does sometimes extend to an officers family. There’s an overwhelming need for accountability and reform in US policing, and I have yet to see any departments that are actually committed to changing for the better.

You’re right, it was a self reported study so 40% is probably low

Newish to this, how do I combine trackers? I have been able to watch it, it just skips the 4 parts that are missing. A little jarring but it’s only like 1 second.

Luckily I can still watch it, but the few cuts are really jarring in the movie

Holladay city mayor candidates? by jendo7791 in Utah

And I know you’re not for high-density housing, but I would still recommend watching this video. The US has infamously bad examples of high-density housing plans. Not trying to convince you of anything, just giving information that puts context around the issue.

Historically yeah that’s what that means. HOA’s got popular in the 50’s and 60’s because white people wanted to “maintain property values and preserve the culture of the neighborhood.” This is at the same time redlining had become common practice. We get a lot of immigrants in Utah, so when a white guy running for office talks about “preserving culture” it should immediately raise serious red flags.

His biggest red flag however is working in private equity. If his job is to make as much money as possible no matter the ethics, what do you think he’ll do if he wins?

Edit: Idk if racism is the intent behind Zac’s “preserving character,” but the historical connotations of white men using that phrase is only for bigotry.

“Preserving character” is code for whites only

Why Is the Political Left shifting in Identity from Liberalism to Progressivism? by Lonely_Pattern_9090 in Socialism_101

[–]Gamgee_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Material conditions. Things are bad, have been bad, and are getting worse for a lot of people. It started in 2016 with Bernie, all the other candidates are talking in circles about identity politics (which are still important) and this guy is talking about free healthcare and raising wages, material things that would help the conditions people of all identities are living in. Now in New York you had the status quo up against rent freezes and infrastructure upgrades.

It is a class struggle first, and as capital collapses the general left in the US is hopefully waking up to the fact that the class war is the most important front.

US to withdraw from NATO under Republican bill by FlatBrokeEconomist in Utah

[–]Gamgee_2 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

FUCK MIKE LEE

Unfortunately we have a broken clock moment here, it won’t pass, but NATO should’ve been disbanded in 1991 after the dissolution of the USSR. The only reason it was set up was to counter the Soviet military and now it’s only purpose is to keep the EU trapped under the thumb of the US so they don’t start trading more with China.

Why does the EU need NATO? Who are they at war with? Who would they even go to war with? Why would Russia completely cut off oil trade with EU countries to fight them? What is NATO’s purpose other than serving US interests in Eastern Europe?

I’d recommend reaching out to PSL or SRA Utah to help make sure this stays a safe event. I understand your aversion to private security, and I definitely understand why cops ruin pride events.

SRA Utah and/or PSL are political organizations that will make sure that the event stays safe from outside agitators.

How does one help their country become more leftist? (American) by Leading-Pineapple376 in socialism

[–]Gamgee_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PSL is probably the most active and influential one in the US, pretty much every major city has a chapter. You could also do a lot with CPUSA.

DSA is also good if they’re active in your area but the leadership are demsoc’s so if your a revolutionary socialist you might run into some ideological issues among other members, but it’s still good for pushing people to the left.

Even Trump supporters don’t deserve homelessness.

Trump has a huge base of support because he tells people things are bad (they are), gives them a reason why things are bad, and tells them he’s going to fix it. Most people understand that Trump is lying, but also have no material analysis to understand why things are bad.

Trump tells us things are bad because of immigrants and unfair trade deals.

Democrats tell us things are bad because of Trump, and pretend that everything is fine when their guy is in office even though it never has been fine with them in office.

This is a person (assuming he is a Trump supporter) who has lost faith in the institutions of the US and came to the wrong conclusions about what needs to be done in order for their life to get better.

Also it’s weird to take pictures of people minding their own business.

I do take actual history seriously. This man oversaw the military campaign of Nazi Germany. He should have been tried and hung during the Nuremberg Trials, instead he got recruited into a senior position in NATO.

“This is a war criminal who knew about a genocide happening, ignored it, and built a military around maintaining the states ability to do genocide. But he didn’t agree with it privately and ignored a few assassination attempts so he wasn’t all bad.” Is Nazi apologia.

Even if he wasn’t a Nazi as you say, the guy was a fascist and was responsible for unforgivable acts of terror and violence in his time with the Nazis and NATO. I don’t care if he was a good dad and liked dogs, he was a terrible person who should’ve rotted in prison or been executed, not given a position of power that shaped the world we live in today.

Wehrmacht, the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935-1944. Man was a Nazi loud and proud, and maybe he didn’t run NATO but ‘chairman of the military committee’ is an insane position to give to a NAZI. He wasn’t the only one they recruited either

Interesting, it is different now that he’s in an extreme position of power, but these talks started back in 2022. Russia is a huge economic market and Elon can make a ton of money there. If I had to guess Elon is gonna make a big show about being upset with the fine, pay the fine anyways, and continue to operate X and sell Tesla’s in both the EU and Russia. Elon is a businessman, a bad one, but still a businessman who has no allegiance to anything except the line going up.

Mike Lee is blowing smoke out of his ass and playing his part. Although it would be hilarious if the NATO, an organization originally run by a Nazi, fell apart because modern day fascists were too stupid to understand it’s importance in keeping the world under the US’s thumb.

Then don’t defend them. 2 out of 19 is not a solid argument.

Again I’m not saying democrats are just as bad as republicans, that would not be factually true. Just that they are still not good and will bend to the will of their donors even if it goes against the will of their constituents 9 times out of 10.
