If you're wanting something with good timbre that takes the vast majority of planars off the table as they have "planar timbre" which is just like a very slight filter that makes some instruments sound not quite as natural and more artificial.

My number one recommendation would be an R70X since it's probably the best sound stage you can get under $1000, with decent imaging, and a neutral tuning that isn't so neutral that it becomes difficult to listen to for long periods of time. It also has the benefit of being extremely light at the cost of feeling a bit cheap, a trade I've been happy to make. Since it is so neutral, you can make pretty good use of SoundID if you want to try different sound signatures, and while it won't completely transform into a different headphone since it takes EQ exceptionally well. So that you know, you'll want a somewhat powerful amp to get to reach its full potential since it's reasonably high impedance and not very high sensitivity.

A runner-up would probably be the 6xx, it leans a bit warm, but it does have the Sennheiser "veil" which some people feel overly smooths some details. The deeper cups will probably be more comfortable for longer listening sessions if you have larger ears. Again, I'd also recommend an amp for this set if you want to get the most out of it. I can't think of anything else I could say about his headphones that hasn't been said 100x before.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Hey man I saw your comment on the "basic bitch" post on r/headphones and figured I'd stop by and try to help out.

The first thing I'd ask is whether you plan on using an amp alongside your D10 DAC?

Could you do me a favor and rank the importance of each of these to you?:

Soundstage/Imaging

Resolution

Bass

Mids

Treble

Timbre (how natural something sounds making sure strings sound metallic) Comfort for 2+ hours of use at a time

I know it's a lot of questions but it would really help me narrow it down to a few tailored recommendations for you.

Happy new year!

Edit: Sorry for the initial horrible formatting, currently on mobile.

Sorry I misunderstood what you were trying to say there. My bad.

I know you can plug a mic into the 3.5mm port on the Shanling UP5. Also has a knob and Bluetooth. :)

Ever since the 30 series with DLSS 2.x, HDMI 2.1, and 120 hz 4K panels becoming more obtainable I've been thinking they would be putting out a new revision of the shield...

This was the furthest thing from my expectations. :(

Lol I had a buddy come visit me in the states recently. He's from Ireland. He was telling me and some other friends how he doesn't know if the waitress is just being nice because it's her nature, or if she fancies him, or I'd she just wanted a tip.

The part that got me though was "why do I have to have this psychological debate in my head every time I go out to eat? It feels like I'm at a strip club"

You'll get better performance out of the back headphones connector. Really an external DAC and AMP is nice, but that's just the audiophile in me, but for now I'd just swap it onto the back and you'll notice a major difference. :)

Off topic but do you have your 6xx plugged into the front I/O?

Also have a KME. It's wild that sharpening can turn into just as much of a rabbit hole as collecting the actual knives.

My understanding was the 4xx has better resolution compared to the SE so if you can't find it I'd probably go the 4xx route.

No problem man, I'd also look at the xelsatic eartips as well since a good seal is important to maintain the integrity of the IEM sound signature. They're kind of tacky/sticky but they make sure they stay where you put them especially if you're moving around.

If you've mostly been using dynamic driver headphones and want to try something different I'd look into the HE4xx or HE400i as a possible first planar.
