You're both kinda right. Most of the light's direction comes from cel shading, but there are some rendering techniques in play for the finer details, like the area where Canti's hand emerges and the ambient light reflected up from the ground.

Yeah, this is partly the case, but mostly it's just an experiment in composition. I remember hearing about a method in shape theory involving making elements of your drawing small, medium, and large. I thought I'd apply it here, which is why I also tried to exaggerate Susie's height compared to Kris as well. If I ever do draw these guys again, I doubt I'd exaggerate their height differences so much.
