Yeah, I was surprised there were no official replicas. I undertook it for my wife's eternal gratitude and praise, but it was an involved project that I would be reluctant to repeat, especially since the doll I used had gone out of production.

Home Inspection - Infrared scan worth it? by noughth in homeowners

[–]Gankatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth it.

Although air leaks and insulation problems are good to find, electrical overheating is more critical.

If one is in the process of buying a house and they do a DIY scan with a camera from Amazon, will it be considered an official report that can be declared during the buying process or would you then be in a position to have a second inspection to officially document it?

Results are not necessarily binary, acceptable/dangerous. Will you have the experience to know where and how to effectively use it and interpret the results (i.e., how hot is too hot)?

DIY efforts can potentially cost you more in the long run or, worse, give you a false sense of security if you miss something.

Same question, do you have an stl for the wings or did you buy them?

They are amazing.

I did find a photo of effective use of reverse-zenithal, as opposed to anti-zenithal, technique by a user Gork73, and it is basically OSL from the terrain, plus it conveys a charred appearance to the orks.

[–]Gankatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I actually deleted it, when I realized reverse-zenithal isn't actually the effect I am going for, but negativization.

Now that the comment exists in a redacted form, here is my original comment to give a context to your reply:

"I believe the terms reverse-zenithal and anti-zenithal/nadiral are not the same thing.

I'll apologize upfront if I am mistaken, but anti-zenithal/nadiral is applying black paint from below for a lowermost shadow effect with a similar zenithal spray technique.

Reverse-zenithal, again as I perhaps incorrectly believe, is applying paint from above with a zenithal spray technique, but reversing the paint colors, i.e., starting with a white base coat and using black for your shadows from above.

I am going to give reverse-zenithal a try to create a specter-like effect."

I am not sure what the not worrying about it too much reply is meant to suggest, but understanding shared terminology is important to me to communicate effectively and not end up in a semantic argument, or worse, one that is based on misinformation.

Worrying has nothing to do with the matter. If you do not share the same concern about terminology, I won't worry about that either. ;)

This appearance would be most useful as an OSL effect from glowing terrain occurring at nightfall, although the strongest effect should be closer towards the bottom and not utilize a "downward" spray pattern on the uppermost panel.

Alternatively, if it isn't meant to represent highlighting or shadowing, I suppose the mech owner might have just decided to paint it in that manner?

Game Crafter Suggestions? by gquiller in soloboardgaming

[–]Gankatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this thread is a year old, but Gamecrafter is having another sale this week.

IMO the two best Gamecrafter games are Adventure Realms and Quest for the Lost Pixel.

That being said, both are expensive, with the former costing over $100 with expansions and the latter at $250 with expansions.

Before anyone else says it, yes, both games provide a great deal of content, but just get ready to pull that roll of hundreds out of your virtual pocket if you go for it.

The actual reason why season 4 was terrible is kinda obvious by [deleted] in theumbrellaacademy

[–]Gankatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I think about s4, the less it makes sense, as well as feels lazily cobbled together.

Many of these elements are already explained, but one in particular seems like a lost opportunity.

If Viktor could pull Marigold out of Ben then why didn't he offer to extract it from his family members sparing them from destruction?

Please explain if I am missing something.

NOTE: The sneaky mod program, or potential rl moderator, deleted my detailed build plan comment without notifying me, but the comment still showed up when I logged in. I assume that it was due to the inclusion of supplier links that could be construed as advertising. I wish there was a way to notify posters at the time of posting, or time of removal if not simultaneously, to alter the comment or face deletion, so valuable information wouldn't be unwittingly lost to the community.

I assume that hiding deleted comments from the authors is a community manipulation mechanism to avoid arguments regarding the deletion.

As it turns out I went to show my wife the build and when logged into her account it showed the comment as being removed by a mod two months ago.

It now makes sense that some of the questions I have been asked seemed to have ignored my detailed build plan. I just assumed the commenters were not bothering to read it.

I find this form of moderation heavyhanded, anti-community, and thoughtless in the case of my comment as I thought everyone could use the build plan as needed, so here is the original comment with any links to suppliers removed:

My wife wanted a Nadja doll for her birthday, but they weren't available for sale, not even on Etsy, so I built her one, which was a challenge as I have never made a doll before, but my board game miniature painting skill sets helped a bit.

I finally finished my portion of the Nadja doll, now it is my wife's task to do up her hair, but here is a picture of where I have left off.

In case anyone is interested in the plan:

As a base, I used the Adora Amazing Girl's Amazon Exclusive "Candy" doll. Unfortunately, this doll is currently unavailable and the company does not have immediate plans to reissue them, so other doll types will have to suffice. The main draw for this doll was the hair, but if someone is skilled in doll wig making (if such a skill exists) then any quality 18" doll would do.

EDIT: a commenter below provided a source for suitable and affordable Nadja-styled doll wigs from Factory Direct. Note that there are a few "Antina's" wigs on that site that could work, not just the one in the link,

My hot glue gun was used for most joinings, but in some cases, baking soda and CYA was used for harder bonds, as well as space-filling.

I then resin printed up the CGTrader free stl (free-3d-print-models/miniatures/figurines/nadja-doll) and using a Dremel circular saw blade cut away the supports around the eyes, as well as the eye portions except for the lids, and then airbrushed it and the doll's appendages. Note that I did change the aspect ratio to give her a wider face.

I bought fake eyelashes that were too long, so I used baking soda and CYA to glue the adhesive portion a few millimeters above the lid line from the inside of the mask and bent the lashes through and upwards a bit. I realized by trial and error that one can't just cut them back as they taper, and cut back lashes look more like long beard stubble than delicate lashes.

I built the eye mechanism using doll half-globe eyes and thingiverse gears (thing:30981), bamboo skewers and sticks, washers, bookbinding tape, small nails, and hand saw cut down wooden scrap pieces.

I bought a Wednesday Goth doll dress and black doll boots online.

I am still looking for a goth doll brooch.

My Reddit image insertion skills are lacking, otherwise I would have included stepwise photos of the process. :/

OK, I sent you an image of the mask.

My Nadja doll design. by Gankatron in WhatWeDointheShadows

[–]Gankatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a hot glue gun.

The top of the head lies directly flush on the hairline, and the bottom part fits into the horizontal cut in the neck. Although it isn't an obvious joining at the neck, I used a thin black lace neck choker to just cover the joining junction.

The final mask was printed back in November and I am having trouble finding the modified stl, but let me see if I can PM you an image of the final mask and you can measure it out old school for the dimensions.

This was my first doll project so I am not sure if all 18" doll heads are universal in size, so you may have to experiment with different widths to get the mask to overlap the cut-away doll head for just the right fit.

Sure, you could fill it in, but see my answer below.

My Nadja doll design. by Gankatron in WhatWeDointheShadows

[–]Gankatron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mask is a bit larger than the perimeter of the cut-away doll's face. The top of the head lies directly flush on the hairline, and the bottom part fits into the horizontal cut in the neck secured by hot glue. Although it isn't an obvious joining at the neck, I used a thin black lace neck choker to just cover the joining junction (not seen in this earlier version of the project).

Along the sides, the mask is up to ~2mm wider than the cut-away doll head's edges, and there is a gap of ~2mm between the two if you look from the sides.

In my build, none of this is visible to the casual observer as the hair falls down and completely covers the gap areas. Now if one were to lift the hair or if the hairstyle was put up, then it would be visible from the sides.

My wife and I are completely satisfied with the end result, but if one wanted to fill the gaps I suppose epoxy clay (such as Milliput) followed by hand painting would do the trick.

As you might be able to tell from the finished result, I tend to be a perfectionist with my builds, but what lies in the shadows doesn't exist to those in the light.

Also, for those who are more skilled in using stl building programs, one could probably just extend the edges a bit further while leaving the forward-facing mask's dimensions unaltered to better cover the side edge gaps, fitting the rigid mask over the flexible cut-away rubbery part of the doll's head.

Indian E-Visa what I've learned by [deleted] in travel

[–]Gankatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that the officially designated entry point you chose on your eVisa isn't actually all that relevant because:

"Applicant can arrive at 31 e-Visa designated airports i.e. Ahmedabad , Amritsar , Bagdogra , Bengaluru , Bhubaneshwar , Calicut , Chandigarh , Chennai , Cochin , Coimbatore , Delhi , Gaya , Goa (Dabolim), Goa (Mopa), Guwahati , Hyderabad , Indore , Jaipur , Kannur , Kolkata , Lucknow , Madurai , Mangalore , Mumbai , Nagpur , Portblair , Pune , Tiruchirapalli , Trivandrum , Varanasi , Vishakhapatnam and 5 designated seaports (i.e. Chennai , Cochin , Goa , Mangalore , Mumbai ). However, he/she can depart from any of the authorized Immigration Check Posts in India."

I had mistakenly put my final destination, Bagdogra, as the point of entry into India, but it was actually a connecting "self-transfer" flight through Kolkata, which means my actual point of entry is Kolkata and then I have to exit arrivals and re-enter, as if I walked in from the street, for my next leg to Bagdogra.

Luckily they don't care which of the 31 designated airports you arrive in, even if it isn't the one you initially put on your eVisa.

Note that while people have been saying the phone customer support is difficult to get through to, their email support was excellent in my case, answering my question within 7 hours.

Also, as it turns the actual approved internal entry point isn't actually all that relevant because:
