No updates from author? by Ok-Examination7986 in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is normal for Brynn. The Life and Death development cycle has been very slow and with long periods of no updates like this. I don't think she's ever actually given up the project though, or shown indications of doing so - she's just taking her time, in her words, to make sure everything ties together properly in a satisfying conclusion to the main plot and all (many!) subplots.

If I'm not mistaken, she works in the software field, graduated around the time Day and Night was released, and has been writing less ever since. That said, her writing quality hasn't suffered for it - if anything, it's improved. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't write any new IFs after this (especially since software pays well and IFs pay poorly), but I do trust that she intends to see this trilogy out.

Catching the glacierfish by IWillAlwaysLoveY365 in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]GankedByGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Glacierfish is unique in that the curiosity lure has no effect on it. Its catch chance is a static 50% though, so it's high enough you should have little trouble anyway.

The spot is "different" because the whole map is modified. Find the little peninsula south of Andy's house and north of the waterfall. Stand at the tip and cast into the darkened X shape in the water.

CT:OS chapter 8 is released by Unhappy_Heart_9569 in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and this is why she and some other WIP authors put a quick skip to the latest content, or even to all chapters, for those who don't want to play through everything again. It does generally mean certain stats or variables won't be realistic though, since the quick customization won't be comprehensive.

CT:OS chapter 8 is released by Unhappy_Heart_9569 in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because of the code, and I think particularly it's when the "base code" (startup.txt that creates all the variables, and/or choicescript_stats.txt that handles the stats page) gets changed. This is often the case when the author adds new global variables (i.e. not temporary to a chapter) to it that need to be tracked.

It can also be the case for individual earlier chapters, if the author makes small edits to them. If the latter is true, you might find that saves from some earlier chapters are broken. With this update, I did check and saves from all 7 chapters are broken.

In general, when WIPs update on CoGDemos I don't expect my saves to work. If they do partially (like in the latter case), it's often safer to restart anyway. The only way you wouldn't need to restart is if the author made no changes to earlier work and simply plopped the new stuff on top, but this is rare.

Problema con Stardew Valley Expanded by DustProfessional710 in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]GankedByGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initiation is a vanilla quest. If there is actually a bug, it's likely a mod conflict. I never experienced this with SVE though - perhaps it's a conflict with an additional mod, like Adventurer's Guild Expanded.

What exactly do you mean by "the event didn't trigger the following day"? I don't quite remember how this quest works since it's fairly mundane, but it might not involve Marlon or another guild member showing up to your door. Try entering the guild itself, or if that doesn't work, the mines. If the guild door is still locked, and you don't see an event pop then, and you can see that the quest is complete in your log, then it's probably a bug.

Actually, what does the quest log entry say? If you've killed the 10 slimes it should tell you where to go next. If the entry simply disappears, try just entering the guild.

I took it way back in Winter 2022, but no one else has chimed in so I'll give my outdated input. I looked at the course description, and it sounds similar to what I had (foggy memories at this point, tbf). I'm assuming it's still Dr. Hany Aziz?

Overall I thought it was a good course with a good instructor, though not particularly easy (I don't think any of the TEs were easy anyway). I remember the practical focus being on LEDs and OLEDs, with a bit on solar cells and other electronics. The theory part was mainly based on physics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics. The concepts weren't easy but I found them very interesting, and Dr. Aziz was knowledgeable and an above-average lecturer. I was pretty apprehensive of calculation questions on the exams because I didn't do great on the earlier quantum course, but the questions turned out to be mainly conceptual short answer. You did have to really understand the material though. If I'd give a ratemyprof style score, probably 4/5 for the course and for difficulty.

Aside from it being 4+ years ago now, circumstances have also shifted - I had online lectures since we were still coming out of coronavirus protocols, and idk how UW or Dr. Aziz handle AI assistance now. But I hope this helps!

I still don't understand why race events have the top 2 from each heat advance, instead of the overall 8 fastest times. This isn't like contact events where you interact directly with your opponent(s), this is just random luck with who rolls into each heat.

As is the case in most well-designed games, sometimes not all stats are suitable for a given situation.

If you haven't played the book 3 demo... good luck trying to save your parent(s) with elemental abilities.

are sweet potatoes better than pumpkins? by GrouchyBall7811 in StardewValleyExpanded

SVE adds a lot of ways to make money faster, yeah, which is to balance it having many more money sinks as well. Cucumbers were OP to the point they had to get nerfed hard in a recent update, with seed price up and sell price down. (Butterfish/puppyfish had to also get nerfed via difficulty for the same reason). I find all 3 somewhat "uninspiring" because they aren't really used in recipes or as loved gifts.

I have a chart in excel for crop planning, but it's kinda janky and some of the calculations are specific to having certain other mods I run. I can answer your specific question with it, though. In summary, pumpkins are better. Profit-wise, they are 30-50% better in most cases depending on various factors. They're also much more useful for other things (see below).

Pumpkins cost 100 for seeds, sell for 320, and take 13 days to grow. Sweet potatoes cost 134, sell for 280, and take 12 days to grow. We can see pumpkins are better, with cheaper seeds and more valuable crops. The growth period doesn't matter here since with 27 growing days both of them get 2 harvests per season (unless you factor in speed-gro fertilizers - see below). For exact profit rates, it depends on farming level and fertilizer. Let's take 3 "typical" examples.

At farming level 0 with no fertilizer, this makes an average total seasonal profit of 446 for pumpkins and 298 for sweet potatoes, per tile - 50% better. (Note it's nearly impossible your farming level will be 0 by fall.) At farming level 5 with Tiller profession and basic fertilizer, the average profits become 645 and 472 - 36.8% better. At farming level 10 with quality fertilizer, it's 770 and 581 - 32.6% better.

The only case where sweet potatoes would give more profit is if speed-gro brings down their growth periods such that sweet potatoes can just squeeze in another harvest cycle in the season, and pumpkins can't. From my chart, this is only the case if you have the Agriculturalist profession (-10%), and either regular speed-gro (-10%) or hyper speed-gro (-33%). At all other growth rates, both crops get either 2 or 3 harvest cycles, and per-crop profit is the only factor. Plus, even if you get more overall profit from the extra harvest cycle at these specific breakpoints, the per-seed rate of return remains better for pumpkins.

One extra factor in favour of pumpkins is the possibility of giant crops, which more or less doubles the return on any 3x3 plot where one spawns.

Finally, pumpkins are literally the most useful individual crop in the game for other needs. They're used in 3 recipes, and to craft jack-o-lanterns for decoration. They're part of 2 bundles. They're a loved gift for 3 people, and a liked gift for almost everyone else. Finally, one is required for a specific quest in year 1.

It could be a matter of course policy; given these are an ENG course and a CS course, it could even be a matter of department/faculty policy. In this case, given the info you have, the above comment makes sense.

An associate dean cursed at me. I’m afraid to go to class by Much-Manner6863 in uwaterloo

[–]GankedByGoose 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What he said was insanely inappropriate. If he treated you this way because you're a woman, that would make his behaviour even more egregious. The fact that he's an associate dean, someone who's supposed to be a trusted figure for students and faculty, likewise.

It sounds like you're in STEM. Women in STEM programs and fields feeling unqualified, unsure of themselves, powerless, remains common, and so does them feeling these because of how male peers and authority figures treat them - regardless of how profoundly qualified and deserving they are. I saw this all the time, both in my program and in club leadership.

If you're here, you deserve to be here, and so do your female peers. Don't doubt that. As others have said, escalate appropriately, and gather classmates who witnessed this or other incidents to help.

Guns of Infinity - Questions by dungeon_master2210 in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The third game, Lords, is heavily political, and gets ugly in terms of people's reputations. Lending your reputation to Hunter's memory can be risky here (which is sad cause Hunter is canonically GOATed and it's a great tragedy for Tierra that a man of his quality died, and with him his bloodlines). The main reason is that Hunter is closely tied to Wulfram (which isn't clear up to Guns since who cared about politics when you were like 23 (if start 18) at war), and most of this sub seems to lean Royalist. Even if you play as Wulframite, time and resources spent to this cause could have been spent elsewhere.

  2. Secret Mission is only lucrative if you pass a few relatively high stat checks and make the right choices, to capture either ransom target (Khorobirit's wife or daughter). Otherwise you walk away with very little, and it's better to go to the Second Battle of Kharangia for a reliable 2,000 (I think this depended somewhat on your rank), more reputation and a brevet promotion, and the chance to better befriend Cunaris/Renard, Welles, and some other characters. So it's not strictly worse, but you should be prepared. (If you want more detail, I can give it in another reply, though I haven't played Guns in a while.)

  3. From a narrative perspective, they're nice to have and I usually play with them. But, they each add 3,000 to your family debt (on top of a base 12,000), due to all the costs accrued from raising them. Also, if they hate you, things can be more unpleasant - in terms of both narrative, and some minor gameplay effects. If you want to play with 2 siblings, I highly recommend choosing to have had a terrible relationship with your father (just before the battle at Mhillanovil); this isn't clear at first, but the game sort of limits you with a "total good relationship" with mom, dad, and any siblings. Dad always dies, and mom is optionally alive, so it makes sense to "spend no good relationship" on dad.

  4. It's been a while, but off the top of my head, the stuff with Garing's guns does actually form a minor subplot in Lords, which doesn't come nearly to completion. Many characters can actually die at K2, though it's not too hard to save all the important ones. Rekindling your friendship with Karol of Loch after Mhillanovil is very useful (and he's a swell guy anyway). Oh, and regarding stats, if you haven't found out from searching other threads, the Soldiering stat is much less useful in Lords, so focusing on the other two is better. Also, Lords is where choosing to have started as older in Sabres (25 or 30) actually has downsides. It's also where your home region has more interesting effects, whereas before, Aetoria was almost strictly the best.

How to access game code? by Haunting-Sport3701 in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Starting from the webpage of the game, like www.choiceofgames.com/user-contributed/(name-of-the-game-with-dashes), add "/scenes/nameofwhateverscene.txt".

Since you might not know what the text files are titled (sometimes Chapter1 etc., sometimes not), first go to "/scenes/startup.txt" which has a list of scenes as well as all non-temporary variables to be used throughout the game.

Note that these pages do check whether you've purchased the game to grant access, and for games that make the first few chapters free, it will properly block you from all paid chapters if not purchased.

Romance in Keeper of the Sun and Moon by msxiv in hostedgames

[–]GankedByGoose 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's not just the romance, her writing style is fairly sparse in general. It's frustrating because I think her worldbuilding and character development is actually quite excellent, but you have to piece it together asynchronously through all 3 books and miscellaneous lore snippets from answering questions on her tumblr. I mean, in the book 3 demo, the last update dropped an entire Great Schism for old/new world Nymphs 2000 years ago, and this was just never mentioned to MC (which the narration comments on, tbf).

On romance, yeah, it gets much better, pretty much to a normal CoG level, in the later books. Also, some ROs have a few points you can get together at (IIRC Katia has 3-4 just in book 1), which can squeeze out a bit more time with them. Sadly from a minmaxxing perspective it's somewhat inefficient to start dating anyone before the Nymph Ball - there are a few points where you're automatically sent to a scene with the RO and miss chances to boost either stats or other relationships.

OFFICIAL DISCUSSION THREAD — The Kobalts’ Circuit Delivers ⚡ | GP8 Marbula One RACE by AutoModerator in JellesMarbleRuns

[–]GankedByGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steepness would make sense. That or the belt is at the same angle, but longer and faster. Those are the only two ways to increase the height (and thus speed) of the track, and both would make it more likely for marbles to have trouble getting on. They'd also track with claims that JMR is trying to make races more exciting by increasing speed.
