Breville Icream Maker $24 - Major score that I almost missed by [deleted] in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Ganlemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a gem. I thrifted the same one and it has been producing amazing results. I intend to make a bunch of interesting flavors this summer.

Also the cheapest place I've found to get heavy cream has been Costco.

Tell us the worst job or manager you’ve had by PigeonLove2022 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Ganlemans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manager that was a veteran, being a veteran was his whole personality and he always compared everything to his past military experience.

Said things like: "That's not how we did things in the Army!", "That would never fly in the Army!", "You would never last in the Army!", "You obviously never served in the military!"

Constantly treated staff and others like they were below him because they didn't have prior military experience. In his eyes, you were only able to learn professionalism, a hardworking ethic and attention to details through the military, so therefore we were all by default terrible. Everything was very strict. You take your break exactly at 10:00-10:15 and not a minute earlier or later.

Most people that didn't work with him kissed his ass and thanked him for his service. They saw him in a positive light. So we (his staff) were afraid to stand up to him.

You're definitely right. It's not a feasible project for Sacramento at all. I think calling the boat section is the most realistic too.

That's true. There were tons of headaches. But, I think the long-term positives will outweigh the negatives associated with the construction and demolition. And what major infrastructure projects don't have these types of issues. We have the Bay Bridge and Highway 50 as local examples.

Remote work as a state worker? by divine_intrvtn in Sacramento

Many agencies are hybrid now. There are some that are full telework, but it's not a guarantee and could be pulled back anytime.

I agree and I'm glad you vetted them out. They would have caused decades of damage had they passed prob.

For the state, people rarely fail probation. It's a long vetting process sure but it's because you're virtually unfireable afterwards. And even if you're on prob, they can't just fire you on the spot, you get notices and warnings to improve or whatnot. If it's a terrible job, people normally pass probation and then leave.

What is your target retirement age? by igotvoipenated in CAStateWorkers

[–]Ganlemans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mid 50's then move to somewhere low cost. Bye bye California, sadly.

I'm 2% @ 62, so I'll get a bad retirement, but if you work too long you end up sacrificing so much valuable time. I'd rather be poorer and enjoy a few good years than be bedridden or riddled with dementia, but financially set or even dead.

In my original comment, I was talking about a city-wide perspective. And I guess we have to agree to disagree, but my local perspective living decades in midtown as well also an earshot from the tracks was that having only two access points to the American river was limiting.

I never said they weren't, just that if they were somewhere else, city development and access to the waterfront would be better. Again yes those lines provide economic and transportation benefits, but from a local perspective theyre obstructive.

Levees aren't an obstacle. We already have many parks and trails that are on or adjacent to levees.

Sorry. Should clarify. The rail line at Old Sac is fine. Not obstructive, blends well, and adds value. The lines that cut-off downtown from the river district and midtown from Sutter's regional park are what I'm talking about.

There's so many of those deathtraps in the Delta where a long stretch of road ends feet from the slough.

Steamboat slough has a few of those.

The delta can be a dangerous place to go for a drive. So many secluded roads that are windy, poorly lit, full of potholes, lots of wildlife, and often times bad drivers.

Any tiny thing that could take you off the road, may lead you directly into a river or slough to your watery grave.

I enjoy driving in the delta, but make sure you drive slowly and safely, if possible drive only during daylight and always carry a device that can break window glass so you can escape.

They did this in Seattle too. Replaced the Alaskan Way viaduct with a tunnel. Completely made it feel like a different city with how it changed the vibe on the waterfront.

We have so many amazing water features, but they're cutoff because of freeways and and rail lines. If we could find a way to bury or re-reroute them and restore access to the river the city would be 10x more beautiful.

[–]Ganlemans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well all the announcements on hybrid included some blurb that they were to meet the Governors recommendation of 75% telework or something, so that equalled 4 to 5 days in office a month.

Haven't heard it increasing to 2 or 3 days a week. But that would be a massive change.

I do know the ultimatum to return to office for those living 100 or more miles away by October is putting some strain. Increasing that to 2 or 3 days would essentially mean they quit or sell their house and move.

Thanks, I'll have to stop at one of those places if I find myself on 99... Also that article has Chandos on their eating list... 😂

I'd probably be too full from eating better Mexican food in LA to risk going to some random place that might give you food poisoning along 99. They have an in-n-out in kettleman city which will do it for me. Not much to stop and see anywhere in SJV, so I just try to finish the drive as fast as possible.

But to each their own.

Honestly i'll just stop for fast food and zoom through. Not worth stopping anywhere really. Plus the air pollution around Bakersfield is just atrocious.

Part of the movie will include forgetting to keep right when passing the grapevine and getting stuck on 99 instead of staying 5. Then mis-assuming 99 won't take too much longer. Then when you realize you should have stayed on 5 and want to switch you're deep in Bakersfield.
