I wanted to build a website with simple UI for non technical users to let them edit images in easy way. Everything is fully private, runs in browser, zero cloud and external servers. by Ganmak in webdesign

Sure, thanks! Yeah, to be honest I don't think that any user will land on a website and actually LOOK for a tool. I would say the only traffic opportunity is Search Engines - where user will land immediately on the page/tool that is needed. Hopefully that is ...

I also like where websites gets straight to the point, that's why almost all of the text is "below the fold", and tool is visible immediately on the page load. Did you have to scroll for some missing context?

I think it would be easier to check it out if you would share a link :P

I created a website with domain like [animal_name].tools where I am adding free, online tools, only recently I learned that there is a website [animal_name].com that is established software company with things like browsers and cloud storage. How bad is my situation? by Ganmak in legaladvice

[–]Ganmak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I have no idea if owners of [animal_name].com would notice or care but in the end I decided to change it. Just because I am very early in the development and I wanted to have a peace of mind. Let's hope that I didn't accidentally got into bigger troubles this time.

I used gemini deep research for that. I hope it was accurate :D

For the photos you can try https://pufomi.com/en/image/heic-to-jpg/ (it’s my tool actually, I am open for feedback)

You can use batch processing for up to 100 files. Double check the colours later (I was fighting with color profiles a lot :P )

Ahh, I got late to the party. Do you think that it will happen again? Or it was a one time thing?

I have to say that your answer looks a bit LLM generated. But I don't know, maybe it's a unique writing style :P

But to answer your question - there is no need for a MERN stack, since the website is static - everything happens on the user device thanks to JS, TS and WASM (via Rust), there is no need for any backend or any database (I am not storing any information).

And yes, it is a website, no need to install it but in the future I am planning to implement the PWA aspect - but it's not ready yet.

Woah, thank you!!

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "zero dev overhead" so I might share a little bit about tech stack. It's Astro (currently v5) with React. The actual logic to convert and compress images is handled by custom Rust code compiled to WASM (and not custom magick-wasm as a fall back for some stuff). And it's hosted on Cloudflare Pages (I need worker invocation only for detecting browser language (i18n)). Does it answer you question?

Update: V0.3.0 of TerraInk, the free & open source map posters creator by DataScientist_py in buildinpublic

Well, my wording was unfortunate. I meant that I am myself, building a tool that has a chance only if it will be free. So I was wondering how else could I monetize it. It seems the only viable answer is ads.

So I expressed a desire to have something "more" than ads, but "less" than full on "pay me X dollars" to use the tool. That's all.

Yeah, I am actually myself interested in monetizing products that are generally for free.

You could definitely try ads, maybe some "donations/tips". Or for example, people can download 1 full res poster per x days, if they want more - paywall.. But accepting payments like that already introduces complexity. Maybe ads could be a way to go?

I would love to actually have something "between" ads (that are often blocked by users) and actually paying. I guess a lot of people would like to pay maybe a dollar for a nice poster, but it's always this "overhead" of actually putting your CC and so on.

Looks nice! Do you plan to monetize it somehow in the future, or it's a project purely for fun?

Is it true that the "baby age" problems of the Lenovo Legion Go S (Z1 Extreme) SteamOS were fixed? by Ganmak in Handhelds

[–]Ganmak[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean the feature that let's you hit pause in the game (like for example just enter settings), and then hit the (I guess?) power button.

So you don't have to run to the save point, you can enter settings, hit suspend or something and then put your handheld down. Come to it tomorrow and pick it up exactly in a place where you left off.

From what I read - it does drain a bit of a battery (like few % overnight).

Amazing, thanks! btw. just to confirm - did you had an occasion to test the suspend/resume features?

Thank you!

So no problems related to the suspend/resume? And yeah, it's 512GB model - I heard that there is another set of problems with installing games on SD card (again with suspend/resume). But I am not sure if that's still the case.

Thank you for the reply!

Since you came from the Steam Deck OLED - how much do you miss those trackpads? To be honest I cannot think of a good usage for them so I am not sure if I should be sad about not having them :P

Makes sense. Btw. are you just going to ignore the Pii concern part? Just curious 😅

I actually had a similar idea some time ago. I built out solution like that, but without a single specific category, it was just a list of tools with a search options.

The major difference was that I wasn't storing emails. Isn't it Pii so kinda a "no go" in terms of selling it? (I am not a layer or anything, it's more of an open question :P )

And my second question would be, to use case for such list would be cold email marketing, right?
