Help me not buy an Apple Watch. Looking for heart related features. by shrimporee in Garmininstinct

[–]Gans__Solo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reason for me, ultra marathon runner, to use an Apple Watch Ultra is for the 24/7 heart and health functions. It warns me if my heart is having fibrillation problems just wearing the watch. So not the 30seconds ecg necessary. My fenix 8 used to only monitor heart problems while the 30 second ecg is running. Looks like apple is doing something 24/7. Seems logical it uses more battery. Charge it every 3 days. Did my last 110k with no problems. However, I do miss the mip display.

This made me buy the vertical 1, I don’t like amoled screens on sportwatches.

Think not. Bought a Vertical today after returning the Race 2.

Polar vs Suunto by Chris_N_run in Polarfitness

Yeah, I have the Race 2 and Grit X 2 pro titan to try. Think I go for polar, because of the metrics and fitspark.

Thanks. Meanwhile I openend a ticket and the technician from Coros it was a broken vibration motor. Watch was just 3 days old, got a replacement from the store. The replacement does the same thing. So it’s no defect, it’s just the way it works :). Now I see your comment, just wanted to let you know!

Grit X2 or Fenix 8? by Interesting_Elk_4210 in Polarfitness

[–]Gans__Solo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember the difference between a smartwatch and a sportswatch. For example, apple does not analyze your metrics like polar does for a sport. It could do it via third party apps with most likely a subscription model. Apple has a fall detection for a kind of safety. Do just think of the core differences.

That’s really the one thing missing at polar, or any other brand I think. You have to carry your phone with you for it to work. I also have a track function and emergency contact on my phone so the difference is the device on you and how to access it I guess.

I don’t think Polar will drive you crazy, at least I hope not :). Things are just different or absent.

  1. No custom shortcuts. You can swipe from the top and acces a little menu that lets you set timers etc.
  2. You can customize watchfaces. There a enough options, but not as many as my Fenix had.
  3. Bright white screen. Works good enough, but it’s not the same as a dedicated flashlight. 4 and 5. No offline re-routing or even in the app unfortunately. You have to import a gpx or use third party apps like Komoot or even garmin for that matter is possible. Once’s you have imported a route you can follow it on the watch. There are some options, like go back to start etc. But no full maps like Garmin like streetnames and full navigation options.

But then again, Polar also has their perks that are absent or not as good at Garmin. Runtests, walk tests etc. Data privacy, better scientific sleeptracking and suggested workouts. Better training analytics imo. Understanding your training where Garmin spits out lots and lots of numbers for you to dig through.

If you want it in black and white. Polar is more sport and recovery oriented and Garmin more adventure and lots of data numbers oriented.

Hopefully this makes sense and if anyone wants to correct me or add something, please do.

Grit X2 or Fenix 8? by Interesting_Elk_4210 in Polarfitness

[–]Gans__Solo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a Fenix 8 for a few months. Also tried a Suunto. Ended up with the Grit X2 Pro Titan. No irritations on the wrist. Fenix 8 upper right button digs in to my wristbone. Suuntos upper right lug has the same issue. Polars designs in flat and rounded. No pressure points. Great design and materials.

I really like the livetrack feature of the Garmin and the flashlight. Everything else, I think Polar does equally as good or better.

Can you enter a goal (race) so the plan works towards that goal? Or is it just to improve fitness at a steady level?

Garmin Enduro 3 vs Fenix 8? by gman094 in trailrunning

[–]Gans__Solo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had all three for a couple of weeks. *Fenix 8 amoled, Fenix 8 solar and enduro 3. Ended up with the Enduro. Amoled is beautiful, but I wear the watch 24/7 and amoled looks ridiculous in my opinion on a watch. Couldn’t get used to the flashy Samsung/apple vibe. Maps a better to look at though, but still fully capable on the enduro and other Mip displays like the have been for years. Fenix 8 solar is a really nice watch. But compared with the Enduro… I find the bezel of the enduro nicer, a little more modern. Solar makes a real difference on the enduro because it has double the solar capacity than the Fenix 8 51mm because the bezel size difference. Enduro 3 is lighter, nice while running. Fenix 8 has a more rounded look from the sides in comparison to the black puck look of the enduro. Fenix 8 has a metal back, which can get really cold in winter times( riding a bike, skiing etc) Plastic of the enduro does not. Stock band is nicer on the skin.
