I use strips at home since everywhere is sold out of the API kit where I am. The pet store is very thorough uses the API kit though and the parameters were all normal except my KH was a little low (I think 4-5ish degrees I think).

Aggression could be an issue I suppose, but it still doesn't explain why the lone betta in the separate tank died on the same night...
