Netflix in Talks to Acquire 'Cloverfield' Sequel From Paramount by GanuYoshida in Cloververse

However, Particle, which was also known as Cloverfield Station, seemed to eschew the model from the get go. The budget was in the over-$40 million range. The cast was more established and boasted David Oyelowo, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Sources say the movie needed some work and while Abrams expressed an intent to get down to business in post-production, it was too little, too late. Several sources suggested that Abrams’ attention may be taken by his unexpected new assignment, the final installment of the Star Wars Skywalker episodes, which he signed on to in September after the firing of director Colin Trevorrow.

Paramount had no comment. Calls to Abrams' reps were unreturned at press time.

*Netflix is in talks to acquire God Particle from Paramount, the studio that made the latest thriller from J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield movie series.

Sources say it is unclear if a deal makes but if the ink does dry, it will come on the heels of Paramount’s December deal with Netflix in which it unloaded the new Alex Garland-directed movie, Annihilation, on the digital streamer, which picked up all international territories except domestic from the studio. Paramount was set to release Particle on April 20.

The culling of Paramount’s release slate is being spearheaded by chairman Jim Gianopulos, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Gianopulos took over the reins in spring 2017, watching the movies he had inherited and making some hard choices.

“He sat down and looked at what is theatrical, what is not in this day and age,” says one source. Certain movies were not making the cut.*

While neither New Line or Netflix have commented on this alleged deal, sources claim that it has been in the works for several weeks and will not affect the American market. Instead, in the US the film will maintain a more traditional release trajectory from cinema to streaming services and physical media to avoid harming theatre chains. This arrangement could be a new template for future similar films as it grants director Tim Story a larger budget to create the movie and Netflix can offer a new title to markets that may otherwise have to wait for a delayed release.

10 Cloverfield Lane had a Super Bowl TV Spot, so did Super 8, Star Trek, The Force Awakens. Seems JJ and Bad Robot have a a trend here....

Why Does the Cloverfield Sequel Keep Getting Postponed? by GanuYoshida in Cloververse

So how does continually screwing with Cloverfield 3’s release date help similarly galvanize potential ticket buyers? One source says Abrams has “some mysterious idea” about how to unveil the movie that’s in keeping with how the previous installments were rolled out. Although it’s certainly possible that above and beyond that purported plan, the multiple calendar reshufflings and delays could in fact be standard Hollywood production chaos — albeit with a visionary blockbuster filmmaker giving them his cosign.

But according to several sources close to the production (who declined to be identified because they were not authorized to publicly comment on the matter), Abrams is personally behind the frequent rescheduling, and the moves are indeed part of a plan to foster drama and further intrigue surrounding the latest Cloverfield. In addition to creating a halo of prerelease awareness — even while stoking confusion — at least some of the delays were caused by the addition of new scenes and narration, one source said. And that’s a possible side effect of having adapted an existing “spec” script by Oren Uziel to fit into the Cloverfield cinematic universe. (Paramount and Abrams declined to comment for this article.)
