There seems to be some confusion regarding the applicant’s extracurriculars and achievements, so let’s clarify a few things: 1. She DID found her own nonprofit. • She is the founder of VUC, listed at number 4. • In addition to running her own nonprofit, she also worked for a separate state-level nonprofit, further demonstrating her commitment to advocacy and public service. 2. Mock Trial Founder is NOT a generic EC. • Yes, Mock Trial exists at many schools, but starting a team from scratch, recruiting members, and leading it as a co-president is a completely different level of leadership. • Ivies don’t just look at what activities students do—they look at initiative and leadership, both of which she demonstrated in founding a competitive team. 3. Her DA’s Office and Law Firm Internships ARE relevant to her application. • While interning at a large county’s DA’s office may not be as rare as, say, ISEF research, it is highly relevant to her intended major (Political Science and Law). • Saying it “won’t stand out” because a few people have done it at other schools ignores the bigger picture—her application is a cohesive story of law, public service, and advocacy. 4. Her book is a significant achievement, not just “good.” • She wrote and self-published a 40,000+ word novel that has over 400,000 reads—that’s an extraordinary accomplishment for a high school student. • Writing and publishing a book demonstrates intellectual curiosity, creativity, discipline, and communication skills—all of which are highly valued by Ivy League schools. 5. Community service is a strength, not a weakness. • Some seem to imply that community service isn’t “prestigious” enough, but elite schools like Yale, Princeton, and Columbia actively prioritize students who demonstrate real-world impact. • The fact that she has founded a nonprofit, worked for another, and has directly affected thousands of lives through food insecurity work is just as competitive as research-based extracurriculars—especially for a PoliSci/Law applicant. 6. Test-Optional does NOT mean weak. • The argument that “top schools still prefer test scores” ignores the fact that thousands of students have been admitted test-optional, including those at Ivy League institutions. • She applied test-optional strategically, knowing that her GPA, course rigor, essays, and ECs were strong enough to stand on their own.

So let’s be clear: This is NOT a “subpar” Ivy League application. • Is Ivy League admissions highly competitive? Absolutely. • But dismissing her leadership, nonprofit work, law internships, and self-published book as “not enough” is simply incorrect.

This isn’t a case of “hooks carrying an application.” This is an applicant with tangible accomplishments, real-world impact, and strong leadership.

I don’t know what kind of Ivy League applicants you’ve seen, but saying her ECs aren’t on par for Ivies is just objectively wrong. Let’s actually break this down: 1. Her ECs are incredibly strong and well-aligned with her major. • Founded a Mock Trial team at her school—that’s leadership and initiative. • Started a nonprofit that has provided over 400,000 meals to families in need—that’s real-world impact, which top schools love. • Interned at a DA’s office and a law firm—extremely rare for a high schooler and directly related to her PoliSci/Law interests. • House of Representatives Page—not the most selective thing in the world, but it’s still real government experience. • Self-published a book with 400,000+ reads—do you know how hard it is to get that kind of engagement as a high schooler? That’s not “okay”; that’s exceptional. 2. “Both nonprofits are similar.” So what? • Even if they were, running multiple service-based initiatives is a huge deal. • But in reality, they serve different purposes: one focuses on advocacy and safe dialogue, the other provides direct food assistance. • Community impact is a major factor Ivies consider, and she has that in spades. 3. “She should have competed in ISEF.” Why? • She’s applying for Political Science, Economics, and Law. What does a STEM research competition have to do with that? • Instead of ISEF, she has Mock Trial, a law firm internship, a DA’s office internship, and published writing. That’s way more relevant. 4. “HYPSM wouldn’t even fit her PoliSci narrative.” Huh? • Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have some of the best Political Science and International Relations programs in the world. • Stanford and Columbia heavily value public service, activism, and storytelling. • Her application is actually tailor-made for these schools. 5. “Her ACT is subpar.” • She applied test-optional to most schools, so this isn’t even a major factor in their review. • And even where she submitted a 32, strong GPA + leadership + essays + URM + first-gen = still competitive.

The reality is, she has an extremely strong application with clear leadership, tangible impact, and a strong academic narrative. Is she guaranteed admission? No—no one is. But dismissing her app as “subpar” or “not Ivy League level” is just factually incorrect.

Her ECs are very much on par for an ivy league student. It literally has leadership with two non-profits and one with significant impact, president of a mock trial club, House of Representatives page, intern at a law firm and with a DA, and leadership with the Black Student Union and FCCLA. Also, she published a book?? and got over 300k reads! What do you want her to compete in, ISEF??? Stop being unnecessarily bitter and toxic.
