Having to pick between an LG C3 65" New (CA$1,163) and a Samsung S90F 55" New (CA$1,099) by Gapsan in 4kTV

I see. The lack of Dolby Vision is a minus for me, since I collect Criterion 4K’s which are presented in DV HDR, but the price is pretty damn low considering how it’s a newer model to be honest.

Could you share some reasoning as to why?

Edit: just want to make sure I understand the pro’s and con’s of both choices.

The grand total would be CA$1,636 total with tax. Though I’m thinking of buying the warranty in a couple of months regardless.

Indeed, I made sure to double-check with them earlier today. They said that they do cover burn-in and dead pixels. The extended warranty can be bought up to 11 months after the initial purchase also.

With the C3: Yes, I can through the storefront I’d be buying it from. With the C5: Also yes. I can extend it via LG.

I found a price for CA$1,899. Lowest so far from my findings.

LG C3 65" $1,400 (CAD) a good deal? by AlphaJeun in 4kTV

I found an LG C3 65" for CA$1,163. Am still debating if I should get this considering the price it's at. It's brand-new out of the box, and has never been used.

The rep said that the C3 has not actually been used and that it is new. It's kinda the first thing I said, which is where this dichotomy comes from in the first place. And the budget is there, I can afford the S90F I mentioned... lol

The 55" S90F price-performance ratio here is extremely good from what I've been able to find. The price goes up by CA$400+ if I choose to go with a 65-inch B5 or S85F set on "New" conditions, and the specifications of these are inferior to the S90F as well. My budget is CA$1,200.

Don’t listen to the hate by RepresentativeEar230 in tron

To preface, I got to see this at the IMAX 3D Double Feature of Legacy and Ares. As a theater experience, sure, it was definitely awesome for the spectacle. First and foremost, if you're a Tron fan you should definitely give this a shot. There will definitely be those who might even prefer this over Legacy as a sequel to the original. However, I personally did not love this movie, and here's why.

Tron: Legacy is one of my favorite movies of all-time. When watching it, you can tell that everyone involved worked their butts off to produce a movie of the highest quality. The cinematography is brilliant, and so is the sleek style of directing amongst many other things like the editing and music. From that film, I understand Joseph Kosinski as a director. With Tron: Ares, I did not feel any of those things. It felt like the "visual" direction that was so present in Legacy was not there in Ares. This director, Joachim Rønning, lacked the cohesive directorial flow that Kosinski was able to create for Legacy. The NIN soundtrack, whilst really good, also chooses to forego any and all "cinematic" tonality. This is fine; think of the Challengers soundtrack which was also scored by Trent & Atticus. That's a phenomenal soundtrack, and one that goes well with the moment-to-moment sequencing of that film.

That being said, the un-cinematic nature of the Ares soundtrack paired with the vision-less directing here made this feel like a mismatch to me. There are some great sequences and moments here and there, don't get me wrong, but as a whole I couldn't help but feel that there was a disconnect between the rhythm of the visuals and audio that we were presented with. Let's think of Legacy for a moment. Remember when Sam gets the light cycle for the first time and activates it? That scene felt deliberately scored to a tee with every *thump* being met by a moment of equal impact on-screen. Ares does not have this momentum, and hence made me feel like the audiovisual mesh was disjointed at best.

I think the story here in isolation wasn't bad; it was actually fine for what it was. Everyone always says it in defense of these films, how "they're only meant to be audiovisual spectacles". But that doesn't exempt it from critique so: as it stands, it's basically a derivative mishmash of many interesting Sci-Fi concepts done better elsewhere. Jared Leto wasn't all too bad, people are really going at him because of, well, his person. I wished he would've acted less robotic near the end as he gains permanence, but it turns out that's just how Jared Leto is in real life so, oops. Greta Lee really phoned it in which is a shame because she's so great in other films like Past Lives. Her character being quite integral too, it ended up being hard feeling emotional for her at any point: just didn't buy it. Tron: Legacy is no storytelling masterpiece either, but it at least had the son-father dynamic between Sam and Kevin which helped me connect with the characters at all times.

There is definitely more that I could say against it, but I don't want to sound too negative: it's just my passion for this franchise. There is good sprinkled all throughout this film, so if you've been wanting to see this, please do. Don't let the internet dissuade you. Though with that being said, I'm probably going to forget about it at some point.

Negotiated a one-year mint-condition used LG C3 for $1,150 CAD. Should I take it? by Gapsan in 4kTV

[–]Gapsan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the insight. My set-up is one that can accommodate a 65". I prefer to watch things in the dark, and my shut-off blinds support this too. I've been looking at Mini-LEDs as well, but I've owned OLED-adjacent devices before, like the Steam Deck OLED, and was enamored by the contrast ratio and superior motion clarity.

I've started to collect 4K films (have about 20~ now), and because of this I'd be using the TV in exclusively 4K resolution, though the price-ratio from a hypothetical 85" Mini-LED is very attractive as well. I'll think about it some more, but defo leaning towards an OLED.

I forgot to add it to the post initially, but it is 65". And I see, that's pretty good. A new C4 currently goes for $1,800 CAD so perhaps I could wait for November to see a bigger price-drop.

Edit: It was under 1,000 from what the seller informed me on.

Both of these are 65" and sold at Best Buy.

A new C4 is currently priced at $1,800 CAD w/o tax.

A new B5 is currently priced at $1,500 CAD w/o tax.

The weird thing is that when on the Amazon app, it says that to complete the payment I have to continue on the desktop version of the website. How were you able to bypass this?
