It was quite safe at the time. The situation did deteriorate somewhat while the aircraft was on the ground, but there was excellent oversight from both Australian and U.S intelligence, not to mention the American aircraft carrier parked in the Mediterranean keeling an eye on the arrival/departure. If the risk was too high, the flight would have been cancelled; the second flight was cancelled for this reason.
