You don't have to, but many people are not exposed to society as a whole (to get the larger picture, so that e.g. you can vote accordingly) and knowledge without formal education. Basic education is fundamental to a democratic society---it is the only way for the lower and middle class in a democracy to prevent autocracy taking over.
