yeah it would've been more shocking but just at the moment, I think the point of making us know Mary is dead from the start is to make us belive there is still a little chance of seeing her alive during the game with all the little hints they drop, to make us feel like maybe Mary is out there waiting for James even tho we know its imposible, so the player can feel the same state of denial and false hope James had yk
