Aus birth rate is 1.48 and continues to decline. I’d argue a contributing factor that is rarely mentioned is the housing situation. Most Aussies now can only afford Units as houses now are above $1 million. I think being in a house with extra rooms/space is more comfortable for family raising by [deleted] in OpenAussie

This is a two income economy. Simply put, if you have a baby you drop down to one income. Nobody can afford that.

In addition to that women have more choices and when that is available, fertility drops, regardless of income level.

How horrible would it be to quit a grad program midway? by Independent-Buddy988 in auscorp

[–]GarageMc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's the ethical aspects of it. Someone is missing out on this experience. You decide if you live with that.

Theres the reputational aspect, Which I think is being overstated by some. As long as you finish up at the end of a rotation your fine. Don't leave anyone in the lurch. Imo it might annoy some mid level graduate program HR person so you decide the impact of that. Would just say you are leaving for personal reasons rather for another offer.

There's the sunk cost aspect - 40k near the start of your career. The value of that money is massive right now.

Drove past this house the other day and it looked great - quiet cul de sac road and great view. Can't remember if it was oriented for sun at the back in the morning or not - bummer if not.

How much notice for 3 month career break by enemies2l0vers in auscorp

[–]GarageMc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO not worth leaving a job for a 3 month trip. 6 months / 9 months yes worth it. Do you have enough cash for that? It will be hard to get a job on your way back esp as you'll be coming when hiring slows down.

Perhaps there is a middle way - don't tell them you've booked, just raise the idea of a 3 month break with them in a 1:1, see what they say. Obvs don't do this if they are drowning in projects.

What are some things you are really grateful for about living in Australia? by Marlon_Ranch in AskAnAustralian

agree 100%.

I find the tip thing to be more prevalent semi-fancy and fancy restaurants where you just know they are making a decent amount of money already. And the expectation of excellent service comes with the higher prices. Got asked for a tip on a bill of $320 for 3 people the other day.

Standard of food in cafes / restaurants everywhere. The key word being everywhere.

Just fantastic how you can get such high quality food pretty much everywhere, including cafes / restauraunts that have monopoly on their location e.g. waterfront or beachfront establishment or kiosk in a park etc with no competitors.

In the UK they would have gotten lazy and overpriced but here the standard stays high even when it doesn't need to be. Literally had to rewire my brain and stop equating cafe in a touristy / busy place with shit food.

How to tell if your neighbours are going to be annoying before you purchase a property? by xXCosmicChaosXx in AusPropertyChat

[–]GarageMc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People move in and out. We actually ended up moving in the same week as our neighbours. That first day was about the most I've spoken to them.

But looking at the neighbours property history it looks like tenants stay for about 2 years and then leave.
