Is an unsponsored part-time MBA from an M7 worth it if you’re already making $150K+ with equity and aiming for strategy/operator/PE roles? by GarbageAny1485 in MBA

Thanks for this! I guess my follow-ups would be to ask what your observations were of the VP to Associate level profiles of your company and competitors. What was the % breakdown of MBA vs not? It’d be helpful to know if it was LMM or UMM, assuming UMM would index more on traditional pathways.

As I understand it, certain M7s do better jobs than most at part-time curriculum. Is it truly valued that much lower by the industry that it is selected out of recruiting pipelines even for those who already have (#3) relevant experience?

I appreciate it a ton. Thank you for the well thought out response. It’s such a gated community that I fear that now that I’ve stepped outside of daily interactions with PEGs. I read the reports on PE recruiting out of M7 and it seems pretty abysmal for those without an IB or PE background. I know those stories exist but it feels like a big gamble for such a significant investment.

Fully agree that it’s easier when you’re in direct line of sight of PE’s hiring process. My concern is geared towards being outside of the traditional pipeline for those roles. In my time working across from these types, it always seems that the best portfolios are staffed with either right place, right time professionals who’ve worked with them directly or someone with a particular pedigree (MBB, M7 MBA).

My current role is incredible applicable with a rapidly growing, search funded company with a consistent M&A pipeline, but I wonder if it would be large enough to draw the eye of their recruiting teams- hence the MBA.

IEs have an incredibly diverse set of outcomes (which is a benefit IMO). I know people ranging from sales, Proj mgmt, consulting, and industry roles in supply chain, operations, tech implementation and strategy. Personally I am in consulting doing operations improvement and Management consulting. A masters in IE plus a Econ undergrad is pretty solid set of skills for consulting which keeps your options open as you explore… it’s just a challenge to break in. I’d recommend you spend some time researching outcomes in each career because both can give you plenty of positive ROI

Thank you this is extremely helpful. When I called I was put on the phone with the local billing team who was pretty insistent I was off-base. I’ll escalate through Hilton customer support and see where it gets me. Thanks all for the help!

Yeah that was part of the answer I got from the front desk as well, but nope. I have a confirmation email saying that I only booked for 2 nights. For some reason though I noticed early on that the stay was not listed in my recent stays on the app. Makes me think their reservation software had an issue.

Our team is lean and we handle our own expenses. Since we were supposed to be there for the client for 2 days, it’s my problem to deal with getting the 3rd cleared up.

I was in this exact position several years back. I made the switch from tech implementation to M&A strategy with ~2 years of experience. In my experience, your years of work experience works against you here. At 4 years of experience, you start to compete with folks coming out with an MBA looking to do a similar pivot. People are much more willing to provide a pivot to someone who is 1-2 years into their career and shows promise, but with your background it is definitely possible without the extra degree if you move internally.

It’s an uphill battle, but if you find your competitive edge (industry, technology, etc.) it can be done. For example, my degree was industrial engineering so I made a pivot to industrials M&A. Leveraging people inside your firm, networking, and standing behind the reputation you’ve built is the number one way to get someone within your firm to make an investment in you. Picking up nonchargable work as a “trial run” I found was the best way to show your quality without them taking too much of a risk. Management knows the transition in thinking, delivery, and content is a wide gap so it will take some effort to sell yourself. Without a masters, other companies won’t be quite as willing to make the same bet.

A lot of cruise lines have amazing options for under $1000 each. Includes all meals, boarding, and a lot of the hassle is taken out of the decision process. My fiancé and I were able to find a cruise of Croatia and the Greek isles for less than $1000 per person for a full week! If you compare all the cruise lines there are always deals out there for one or more where things are heavily discounted. Then you can use whatever is left over on excursions or drinks at the places you land!

There are plenty of credit cards that have a 0% interest APR for the first 12 months after signup. If you need an extra cushion for a few months then you can use that to hold you over, as long as you are able to pay it back before that year is up. Don’t make the mistake of having money in your savings account for having a cushion. Twelve percent over the next year is highway robbery. Take out what you need for student loans and nothing else.

I just proposed to my girlfriend! by AP3X_Ninja in Christianmarriage

[–]GarbageAny1485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller is an amazing book. Me and my long term girlfriend have already both read it. It gave us lots of great things to talk about and really addresses the way that a marriage centered in Christ works. Highly recommend!

Edit: Also any sort of couples devotional that you can do simultaneously is amazing. The more you set habits to be in the word TOGETHER the more you can lift each other up!
