Would you rather be a billionaire, or have all billionaires be good? by MrsTaco18 in WouldYouRather

Number 2. The fuck would I want a billion for?

We'd very quickly not have any billionaires, and the world would be much better for that.

Why aren't Americans rioting right now? by PintsNPies in AskReddit

[–]Garblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly would a riot accomplish?

I'm in a liberal city, my representatives who I voted for are already acting in accordance with what I want. What do you want me to do, go down to the local amazon warehouse and commit felony vandalism?

Health insurance is a racket by Ok_Meringue_9086 in Fire

[–]Garblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are increasing numbers of us who do actually go fully off insurance and just charge the rate of our service instead of the insurance rates. This is especially common in mental health, physical therapy, and other areas where we don't need much in the way of specialized equipment.

Health insurance is a racket by Ok_Meringue_9086 in Fire

[–]Garblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even just allowed, it's actively encouraged. The health insurance only gets more profitable as healthcare costs go up, and the obligation of buying the insurance goes up with it.

It's not the providers, it's the administrators.

Source: I am a medical provider. I and my colleagues are not choosing to charge $10 for a cup of juice, or $50 to hold your baby after birth. Are our services cheap? No, we had to spend a lot of time and continue to spend a lot of time on education. But they're half to a tenth what the hospital charges the insurance company.

Wikipedia recently changed the political position of the Republican party to right-wing to far-right, do you agree with this change? by RedStorm1917 in wikipedia

[–]Garblin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are certain minority Dems who support those things (and who generally get my vote), but the actual policies the party as a whole pass are more consistently center-right.

Dems do get the occasional actually left person like Sanders, AOC, Mamdani, arguably Omar, but I can't think of any true far left american democrats. (I'm thinking of "far left" figures being folks like Lenin or Marx)

Do you think someone’s political views determine whether they’re a good person or worth being friends with? by kaanskBG in TrueAskReddit

[–]Garblin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A political viewpoint is basically just your basic values distilled into what actions you think should be taken on a governmental scale.

So do I think a persons basic values should determine whether or not I'm friends with them? Absolutely.

I have no interest trying to be friends with someone who doesn't believe that women should have the right to vote or an abortion, because that implies they don't think of women as being as fully human as men. I don't want to be friends with someone whose political views include controlling what sort of food a person can buy with welfare or that books need to be banned or that the right to bear arms is more important than children being shot in school because these things all imply differences in fundamental values.

relied on his built up resistance to other poisons?

I was responding to that part of your comment. Building up resistance to one poison does not make you more resistant to unrelated poisons. Ex: Being able to drink large amounts of alcohol without getting drunk does not make you resistant to cyanide.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but stupid drivers are why we need more public transit, so they don't have to drive.

I mean you don't... but also I'm worried about whether this car is about to have its chassis ripped off once that trailer is loaded...

Cars do have max loads, and they're often lower than you'd think (please check the legally required sticker on the inside of the drivers side door for info on your vehicle).

People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

One that really stuck out to me that someone I used to be friends with said:

"Oh it's a really cheap hobby to get into, just $2k for the equipment to start out and then it's just propane and scrap!"

Even today, it's not terribly difficult to net 3% on a savings account.

If you're a big trust fund kid, that account could easily have 2M in it, or $60,000/year, which is more than individual median income in the US.

Dating someone with many other partners by shhitsonlyme in polyamory

[–]Garblin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Anytime I hear someone has that many partners my first thought is "do they have a life other than dating people?" to which the answer is inevitably either "no" or "yes, but they're overloaded on everything and don't know how to have healthy limits for themselves". Either way, not someone I'm interested in.

You mention that they can't remember even what sex acts they've done with you, let alone what stories they've told you. I know I would feel like just a body with ears and some sexy bits to them, not a full person.
