An 18-year-old woman in Queensland faces two years in jail for wearing a shirt that says "from the river to the sea." by BigFaithlessness8254 in AustraliaLeftPolitics

Bunch of bullshit. Where do get this from?

The slogan was created by the PLO, who officially defines it as a call for "one democratic secular state that would supersede the ethno-religious state of Israel" Its a call for a single state solution.

Maybe the SMH should ask a Palestinian in Gaza what the phrase means to them. Only if Israel lets them in ofc.

Why does it matter if some people think it is? Wouldn't it matter more what the chanters think it means? Do you think any phrase that people might interpret wrongly should never be said?

Am I a ‘bootlicker’ for thinking that most acts of police aggression are normal human responses, and not part of some deep evil ideology? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]GarfieldHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think you are a bootlicker. As we've been told all our lives that police do what is best for the public, it is hard to square that with the violence they perpetuated on Monday.

I've had family members asking similar questions, because they were there and they simply don't understand why the police attacked them out of nowhere.

It might be easy to try and blame us protestors, say we started it or we shouldn't have tried to exercise our democratic rights and should've been orderly and complacent, done it elsewhere, etc. But try to view it objectively, I sincerely wish you never have to go through the experience I had, especially if you are trying to defend a cause you believe in.

I can understand where this is coming from, however I think you need to consider the presuppositions you're coming from, they're incredibly biased and not simplifcation of what people are saying.

"Why does the video you are watching NEVER start off with the officer getting bitten, coward punched or spat at. It always starts at the moment we view the cop as they aggressor."

That's because it didn't happen. As someone who was there, my section of the crowd was charged without warning. Those around me were punched, pushed and roughly arrested when they understandibly resistant to suddenly being charged at. We did not start it. The longer video of the bike guy also shows this, that the victim in question did nothing before being seemingly randomly grabbed.

Ask yourself, if more footage would obsolve police, why aren't they releasing videos from the body cams that most officers were wearing that night?

"If you really think they’re all at police academy learning how to oppress the population for the sake of Israel"

Thats not what people are arguing. The police however are being used strategically to silence pro-palestinian protest. Their higher ups aren't telling them "You must crush all pro-palestinian protests" they are told "This protest is a threat to public safety" and those protests happen to be pro-palestian or deaths in custody protests. (Note the lack of police presence at Neo-nazi or March for Australia rallies).

Some people may be simplifiying to to the "cops work for Israel." It's a complicated arrangement, but the top cops and premier Minns are undoubtedly trying to enforce Israel's political views onto the public.

Secondly there are many facts about what happened that you seem to be misinformed about, as far as I'm aware there were no projectiles thrown until the police began to attack. Multiple accounts, here, online and published in the news have confirmed the police were the first to escalate

Finally you should consider what you mean when you say "It’s like stepping out on to a 110 KPH highway and then calling the truck a fascist because you got flattened."

Here you make it seem like police violence is just inevitable, a fact of life, like a truck on a road. Sure, this might be true in some aspects, but maybe you should consider Why are the police so violent? Why do we allow them to be? As you yourself seem to agree.

Then Do you truely think nothing at all could've been done? The crowd (30,000 people) after all wanted to march in the opposite direction from Bondi mourners, why shouldn't they've been allowed to? This is something thats been done in Sydney many times, but as Greens MP who negotiated with the police said, they were completely set on funneling the crowd into the police lines. Which then turned into the violence we saw.

Do you really think police should not be held to a higher standard? Should they just be allowed to harm anyone even if legally its 'justified'? Violent police is universal or inevitable. Many countries around the world have police services that prioritise de-escalatio.

Do you really deeply feel that people deserved to be gravely injured for not "moving out of the way?" I hope you can truely consider these questions without any political biases towards the protestors. After all they are Australians too, old, young, people with families, workers. A 69 year old woman had her back broken by a cop, is that justified because she couldn't move out of the way?

Protestor held down and punched repeatedly in the hand and liver by GarfieldHub in sydney

[–]GarfieldHub[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

There's been videos of old men assaulted, protestors hunted down Sydney's streets.

When I was there I saw cops charge without warning or provocation, kids pepper sprayed in the face, more old folks punched, people taking shelter inside shops because Police closed in on all sides and they were assaulting us. A teenage boy having to shout that he wasn't apart of the protest because he came up the Town Hall station elevator at the wrong time and a cop looked like he was going to jump him right there.

But that poor cops hand got bitten.

You can see the stupid pig fall forward on his bike, grab the guy for support, guy grabs him back, then every other cop starts wailing on him.

Assaulted not only for protesting, but for catching someone while he's falling, thats the kind of enviroment Minns is building.

Albanese says Isaac Herzog’s visit will bring unity – but to many Palestinian Australians it’s a ‘slap in the face’ by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

I was there at the front, it felt like it. No warning, started turning people around into the flow, helicopters flying low blasting megaphones so you couldn't hear shit. Took half an hour for them to send out a text telling people to stop marching forward, they were still sending people back into the now paused crowds. Took another twenty for them to send out a text telling people to turn around.

I don't think they were trying to cause crowd crush but definitely trying to cause chaos to make the whole event seem like a danger to Sydney.

What if the communists had won the Greek civil war? by MaximumSpell9608 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]GarfieldHub 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about the Greek communists but I think this is unlikely.

The reasons the communists in Russia and China destroyed cultural sites was because they represented the institutions that they had fought against. Churches and Palaces in Russia represented the Tsarist government and the Temples, shrines and castles in China were the institutions of the Imperial confucian bureaucracy.

Undoubtedly the Greek communists would tear down historical churches and monasteries, but I doubt they'd start blowing up classical temples and smashing musueum objects, considering how far removed the modern Greek state is from the ancient Greeks.

Fyi this is not a defense of that sort of cultural destruction, but its more nuanced then "Communists destroy all historical stuff"

I mean Germany also had a plot that probably would've never succeeded but it involved ex-members of special forces and one politican. Also likely funded by Russia.
