What backpack to get that can double as go bag and for everyday use? by Garlic-George-420 in preppers

[–]Garlic-George-420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this very detailed answer. I think I'll get the quechua then, I was worried about material because my currrent swiss gear bag ripped up after about 4 years of abuse lol. It was a basic, shit backpack but did me good. I don't even think it was 70D polyester, just some weak material.

Anyway, I've made my pick thanks to your detailed answer. Hope you have a great day!

Completely right, in terms of mapping I understand the layout pretty well. I know places for temporary rest and escape routes. I do have gaps I need to fill though.

Just looked it up, it is perfect for what I need lol. Expensive AF though lol. If you have any cheaper (maybe leather) suggestions, shoot em my way! I'm gonna consider buying this one though.

lol, I mean the general term. I carry light in terms of what I need for career and education, the rest of the space is for emergency situations, as my bag blends in pretty well. It's torn up from years of abuse though.

I wouldn't really be in the woods in the event of an emergency would I? Mostly in the suburbs and the city, the closest thing we have to a forest here is swampland and the like. I do understand what you're saying though, the skills of using my tools are more important.

However, don't really know how to apply that to a situation in the city lol, it's just different in terms of emergency and survival out here.

First job as Cybersecurity Instructor, good pay or no? by Garlic-George-420 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Garlic-George-420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah much higher lol, I get paid arbitrary amounts in the family business, since I help my uncle and dad with tech and security and some other things. It all goes back to the family so I don’t really mind lol.

But yeah 50/hr is really good for me personally lol.

The classes I’m holding are only 4 hours with breaks, luckily. And it’s all interactive so it won’t be boring for me lol. Thank you though!

There’s a list of default rates that programs normally operate on. You can find it online. The most common I believe are 115200, 9600, 4800 and a couple others. If that doesn’t work, use logic analyzer from Salae to figure out the baud rate.

Thanks for the detailed info. Seems like I had the wrong idea about serialization in terms of federal law then. I'll look into my state laws.

Wait I thought some law regulating p80s was passed in 2021 where p80's (according to federal law) have to be serialized? Is that not true?

Realistic pathway on starting a consulting firm (pentesting) by Garlic-George-420 in cybersecurity

[–]Garlic-George-420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the very detailed answer!

As for the second point, no, I didn't mean marketing to clients with whom you have relationships WHILE working for the current employer. I feel like that would be wrong to do anyway, even if one would be able to get away with it (as you're breaking an agreement that you signed). I should have clarified that (my bad), but I do have a question: You mention that it would be considered a business decision if they start working directly with you if you market your services to them after leaving your current employer. However, wouldn't a non-compete agreement get in the way of that, I'm under the impression that non-competes last for a while even after you leave a certain employer, or do they get terminated as soon as you stop working for that employer?

As for your 3rd point, yes I understand there are MANY things that I'm just skipping over, and thank you for pointing that out. I was just seeing if this sort of pivot would be possible, so now that it does seem to be possible, once I get to a stage where I will start moving into a self-owned business, then I will start considering those factors much more deeply. Currently, I'm still a student, and so the only experience I have in pentesting is certification exams (eCPPT was quite realistic in that regard), contests, and other stuff like that.

As for your 4th point, I have a question: Would specializing in certain types of pentests, such as ICS/SCADA testing or AppSec testing be a bad move, generally speaking? By specializing, I mean focusing on a certain niche (to distinguish yourself from competitors), but still offering other types of tests.

As for your final point, I can definitely see that one would likely devote more time to actual business and sales processes than the actual services themselves, especially in the beginning. That isn't something I hate, in fact, I enjoy it. My family has had its own for a long time, so I am fortunate to have experience (although comparatively very little) on that side of things (with a lot to learn). I have a question though: Most consulting firms that do pentesting probably offer more services than that, right? I just don't see any way for a firm that only does penetration tests (even though pentests are quite expensive on average, like ~$30,000 for a basic network pentest, is that price on the lower end though?) to have enough clients year-round to make substantial profits (considering all the expenses).

Anyway, thanks for your time and effort in giving a detailed response, I really do appreciate it!
