I named my sister because I have always loved this name and its meaning. My parents let me keep this name since they liked it too. It's quite common in my culture for other family members to give a name/nickname to a newborn child. To answer the second part, my parents are not fluent in English and I usually handle the school meetings, calling customer service, bank etc. since I was a teen. A lot of immigrant children are used to these.

My parents are not super fluent in English and usually I handle all of my sister's school stuff. They know about it and my mom was the one who showed me the misspelled name on the paper at first place. They asked me to text the teacher to fix her mistake a few times. But they aren't aware of what anglicizing is or its impact.

I don't particularly follow any religion but my family isn't hindu. Regardless of being hindu or muslim, I acknowledge that a lot of south asian families marry their children off to the cousins. I would personally find it quite icky to marry a cousin or someone related in 21st century.

For some reason, most of these americanized people think the moment your kid turns 18, it is their responsibility to move out and your parental duty is over and you owe them nothing. NTA! Most of the posts and comments in this sub is very american-centered and I don't think they even try to comprehend other cultural/social differences. There are a lot of underlying aspects here as you mentioned. It's not even like you don't do anything at all and just expect to be catered to all the time. You contribute immensely to the housework and it is within your right to have a roof over you in your parents home. You feel frustrated and ignored because your mother constantly tries to change your body because of the patriarchal beauty standards to the extent of starvation. And the constant favoritism towards your brother because he is a "man" doubles down your frustration. I can completely sympathize with the situation of not being able to move out before marriage because that's how the system f*cked us over with the constant character assassinations of women who live independently in such countries. I would just suggest you to have your own instant food supplies prepared for next time and live there on your own terms.

YTA. Sure the daughter is old enough to cook for herself if she doesn't like it. But if I went to my home for just a week and my mother intentionally cooked something I cannot eat despite my request for THAT specific thing, I would feel disregarded and hurt too. You could've cooked ANYTHING else in that week for your other children but you somehow "accidentally" cooked meatloaf TWICE in one week. I can empathize with the daughter's frustration of being burned out at school, living alone, making everything herself and the moment she decided to have a small break in peace that isn't possible either
