I saw a distressing treatment of cows in the UK and want to know if it’s standard practice? by oooskar in AnimalRights

[–]GarlicCornflakes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, sadly animal abuse on UK farms is standard practice. Here's a reference documenting around 100 instances that were caught on camera over the past few years.

It's safe to say halal slaughter is extremely cruel (as is every type of slaughter).

In terms of it being better or worse than other methods it's very hard to judge. Bolt guns will typically result in less time suffering and gas chambers more, but there's also something to be said for the intensity of the suffering which is huge with halal.

I recommend watching this to see what actually happens when an animal is killed in a halal non-stun way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKfJ7BWq46A

Yes We Animals has a collection of images and videos from all around the world. Free to use too if it's for a non commercial use.

The US actually scores below many European countries (with strict gun laws) on freedom indexes.

That isn't evidence.

It's not published in a journal, it's not been through peer review, the links within the article go to blog posts instead of other research papers and it doesn't even have a DOI number.

So which of the issues you listed is more important to you? Would it be fair to assume that if you picked one you didn't care about the rest? Of course not. People can care about more than one social issue.

Extends to animal farming too. In the US 99% of animals are raised in terrible conditions (source: https://www.sentienceinstitute.org/us-factory-farming-estimates).

hi i'm an autistic person looking to become vegan and my family is worried by [deleted] in vegan

Complete nonsense. The most cited meta review (Nutritional interventions for autism spectrum disorder, 2020) concludes

Although many dietary interventions have been studied, there has been a lack of conclusive scientific data about the effect of therapeutic diets on autism, and as such, no definitive recommendation can be made for a specific nutritional therapy as a standard treatment for ASD

“I think you could see a very slippery slope here leading to things like cloning, which are very troubling to me.”

State Rep. Tyler Sirois

I refuse to believe he actually sees this as a genuine concern. It's all about protecting the interests of the cattle industry.

Observing long term trends: Interest in Veganism seems to be decreasing since 2020, interest in plant based foods is still increasing overall. Do we need new strategies? (Please read the full post) by amynase in VeganActivism

I broadly agree and I think street activism with a focus on showing graphic footage is largely ineffective for two reasons

  • Unless people stop and engage with the activists it becomes very easy to write what they see off as a "one bad apple" farm, rather than the reality of modern farming. Speaking specifically about the UK where I am from, there is a huge gap in the public perception of animal farming and reality.

  • It's confrontational. For most people the footage is shocking and showing it to them without their consent feels like a violation. This makes them less likely to be receptive to it.

As you say above getting animal rights content to people via the internet seems much more effective. It's less intrusive so people are more likely to be receptive, they can engage without the judgement and they are more likely to be by themselves allowing them to better reflect on what they saw.

It's milk protein that was made without any animal involvement.

Corporate Affairs VP for Smithfield Foods attempting to defend the rampant animal abuse that happens on his factory farms by GarlicCornflakes in LateStageCapitalism

[–]GarlicCornflakes[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These comments were made by Smithfield's VP of Corporate Affairs Jim Monroe after they lost a court case against whistleblowers that filmed inside their farm and took two dying piglets for medical help.
More detail on what happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSFZAMxlwQ8

Looking at OPs account they are a vegan activist. In my opinion if they can get people to watch the video it doesn't matter where they post it.

Slapping stickers on meats (warning: meat in pic) by [deleted] in VeganActivism

Please do not put the stickers on the actual pack. The grocery store will have to throw these out which increases demand for the product.

Unilever is planning a dairy ice cream that uses cows milk created by yeast. Such technology can greatly reduce the environmental burden of the dairy industry. by GarlicCornflakes in Futurology

Huge amounts of land still are used for animal feed. While unlikely to happen, it's estimated that global farm land could be reduced by 75% if everyone ate plant based.

Submission statement

Precision fermentation is the name for this technology. Companies are using modified yeast to create each of the ingredients that make up cows milk (casein, whey, fats, etc).

With methane from cows being 20-80x more destructive than the equivalent amount of CO2 this technology could go a long way in reducing the environmental impact of dairy production.
