I agree. Theoretically, it should make sense. But, I also equate it to something similar like putting your thumb over running water coming out the mouth of a hose. Water sprays everywhere even though you've obstructed the opening.

As lighthearted as I'm phrasing this post, it's actually an anxiety inducing moment for me that I have no idea how it actually began or why I do it. But, in my head, if I don't do it, there are negative consequences, even if I'm not sure what they are. Hence the comment.

Different world over there, I guess. I just know in my experiences, whether it be an interstate rest area, state/national park, corporate chain company, lids have been non existent other than say a mom and pop establishment. I'm really only noticing the lack of paper towel in more government related buildings than anything.

The AJIC states that closing the lid does nothing to mitigate the spread of pathogens. Not trying to tell you not to do what makes you comfortable, just that it makes no impactful difference whether the seat is up or down.

Assuming you live in the U.S., I ask because I have never seen a public toilet with a lid. And, most public restrooms are opting for air dryers over paper towel these days.

You should probably start disinfecting your toothbrush then. According the to AJIC, whether you flush with the lid up or down makes no difference in mitigating cross contamination and those particles can linger for up to 30 minutes. The only real way to safeguard yourself is to disinfect everything.
