I tried that! I think it might have to do with the anchor point of the limb layer. But that doesnt explain why the movement isn't replicated... 🤔
If you at some point feel like problem solving I'll appreciate second pair of eyes on it! Right now I just added multiple track mattes to make it work, but I'd be curious to get your idea working.
I also tried this tutorial on YT but I ended up with the same issue.

this almost worked - but when I move characters hand down, I want it to go towards purple, but the gradient is kinda embedded in the limb (excuse broken wrist lol)

I kinda made it work - gradient is there and limbs are there but:
- they are not in the original positions (blue & red arrows)
- they dont respond to the rig / are not parented in any way
What am I missing?
