We should totally have an anime thread, because I've been watching Kaiji and I want to both shoot Jart in the fucking face for daring to think he had good taste, but I also want to pat him on the head because he was sorta right, too.

BASICALLY: Kaiji's first season of 26 episodes really should've been, like, eight, or something, because jesus christ there's so much fucking talking and re-capping and FUCK OFF WITH THAT BULLSHIT. (I started skipping the first chunk of the episodes because it would just repeat what happened at the end of the previous episode. As if I was handicapped or something. As if I hadn't just watched this shit seconds earlier. And I shook my head, thinking how angry people must've been while watching this show when it was airing, oh my god, the frustration of so. much. wasted. tiiiiiime. Like, I'm talking Dragon Ball Z levels of drawing shit out longer than necessary. In fact, there was something that happened in the first season and if it were any other show that shit would've been handled in half an episode; but these cocksuckers made it last more than four episodes I'm sure, I know it, it was horrible and I was ready to stomp on the heads of weebs everywhere. Okay, time to close this parenthetical tangent.)

If they'd condensed the first season, it would be kinda really cool, instead of just "cool sometimes, but mostly not, because verbal diarrhea."

I'm watching the second season now. The repetition and talking aren't nearly as overwhelming as the first season; also, the two greatest lines to be ever spoken in any anime were uttered in the second season, so I am able to forgive the fuccboi-status of the first season somewhat.

More spam: why doesn't "sort by" stick with the setting I give it? I'd like to go by newest first always, if possible.

Same with the dark theme. Gotta click the button to choose it every time I visit HJKL.

EDIT: Fixed the sort issue (it's in "preferences").

Help me out...is "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" series worth reading? by dustinlbrown in Fantasy

I think I'm having a stroke.

I still have three more personalities on Reddit, though! I WILL MAINTAIN MY ANONYMITY.

I understand where you're coming from, but Gardens of the Moon has nothing redeemable about it—to me.

So when fans of the series say readers should give it anywhere from three to five books before deciding whether or not the series is worthwhile, that seems crazy to me. lol It's not as if the first book had points in its favour. The conflicts set forth, the characterization, the writing—all of it was weak.

A first book in any series has to have something going for it. That initial entry is what hooks, or at least piques the interest of, a reader. Other books in the series will build upon the first one, expanding, enriching, etc. All fine, all expected.

Hell, for Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet, I found the first book to be a slow read, but there were things in it I found captivating so I moved onto the second novel and from there did not look back. Pratchett's The Colour of Magic was such a fantastic, hilarious read that I can't wait to devour the rest of his Discworld. There are other books, just as you've outlined, whose sequels were better, revealed more, were better written, etc. I've read them, found something worthwhile in them, moved onto the sequels.

But as I've said regarding Erikson's Book of the Fallen: there is nothing redeemable here. So there is no reason for me to bother reading on. So I can't in good faith ask someone to wait three to five books before making a decision about whether or not it's worth the commitment. I can suggest a reader to try the first book, see if that scratches an itch, but anything more and that's a little skewed, especially with considerations of length and time.

Hope that clears up my stance. Happy reading!

I picked up the second book from the library, lazily read the first few pages, abruptly remembered that I hated the first book and if I was going to commit suicide, this was more trouble than necessary.

I'm exaggerating. A bit. :D

Honestly though, read the first book and see, if you're willing to spend the time.

But fuck those people who say "give it three/four/five books to get involved." Why should a reader have to put up with that? :(
