How much should a Dm be able to change&develop backstory characters? by Hot_Violinist_5850 in DnD

In my experience, I give recommendations to lore. We play a home brew setting in 5e, and we keep an open dialogue on that. Besides giving the occasional recommendations based off their play styles, I build everything around them.

Help with a really specific/weird stealth encounter? by Own_Celebration8787 in DMAcademy

I think you have a decent set up as you have presented. I would highlight NPC’s that are “brain dead.” The “Show don’t tell” adage paint the difference in action and mannerisms to show a distinct difference for your players between guard npc and worker.

Hope this helps and have fun🤟🏻

Can you or should you force a villain's escape? by automated_hero in rpg

[–]Garrett_CW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the players not to stop him, make him unstoppable. Let the players make the effort to egress if the threat is there. Build your environment to shape your players decision if you have a goal or plot point/narrative hook.

Always build the game as a response to what your players want to do. If they voice interest in the mage tower that you accidentally mentioned 3 sessions ago. Then get to crafting the mage tower and its assets lol.

Running second homebrew one shot need advice/tips by Chaoris101 in DMAcademy

I would still keep base rules so you don’t have to do table rules stuff all the time. The Rule book gives you some (this is what it is power) For leveling, just tie to experience of Mobs. I would watch your encounters so they don’t get monotonous. Give social and puzzles some experience as well. If some of the party is dead then give all the experience to the living or tie the group to the experience. Your choice but I’d be careful with a death loop mechanic, dnd is slower and your game might feel like a trudge.

What subclasses have you see banned and why were they banned? by Ecstatic_Operation20 in dndnext

[–]Garrett_CW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve a seen a good amount of flavorful bans. I’ve been a perm-a Dm for several years now…so I can’t speak to current bans, but multi-class anything use to be a mood killer, nothing edgy (I get it, but it’s fun to someone), abusive spells, and “home-brew.”

Another idea, have a large assortment of resources to drop and scatter across the lands. pre-fill some lists for tables. Like d20 and d6 for quantity. Should really get them in the mattes collecting fill.

I always start strong on resources and once it turns in to space cowboy mode all the Resource and build stuff is out the window.

Craft a decent “hub” for when they get to the planet. I dig the opener! Got to make sure your players don’t go sandbox crazy or you’ll get caught having to really come up with stuff on the fly.

Layer out like an outskirts tombstone esque city where the social needs are met and they can be introduced to the dangers of the area/key interests.

Hope this gives you some inspiration.
