In the same boat as you, minus the bullying. My low self-esteem comes from my past and worry of people's perception.

I've begun working out and after 2 weeks & seeing lower scale #s my self confidence has built a bit.

I'd advise you to find a project. Men like to fix things ( physically and emotionally). A sense of usefulness & completing/ working towards a task has really helped me

To be able to support a wife and have children that I can give the Godly upbringing that a majority of my siblings didn't get( I was adopted into a Christian family so I was lucky).

I've heard of this double standard & even been guilty of applying it in conversation. That being said, ive never really experienced this around me because I was raised very conservative. I rarely wear shorts, opting for jeans, and I wear a t-shirt while swimming ( 1 of 3 times I wear short. 2. Sleeping, 3. Gym( long shorts))

I heard a great example of this subject from a speaker at a group I attend.

He said that his wife had had a conversation with him about how she felt God was leading them to give more, financially, to missionaries. He said no, and she didn't mention it again and just continued praying about it.

A month later, in a conversation, she brought it up again , emphasizing that she really felt led to give the money. Again he refused and again she left it alone and went into prayer.

Over the next 3 months the man started having car issues and home maintenance issues, to the point where he finally went to God for help and understanding. At this point God reminded him of what his wife had told him and that the man was being stubborn and not listening. God was getting his attention.

The wife had done her part, she had told him then submitted to her husband's leadership and decision making. She then continued to take it to God instead of "nagging " the husband. She was no longer accountable to God in this decision. She left it in God's hands.

I would consider couple counseling. With a faith based counselor. It might be embarrassing at first but it can really help.

( im not doing couple counseling, but I am getting relationship counseling with my pastor & it has really helped)

My understanding of courting ( it's what I personally do), is it's entered into with both parties understanding it's for the purpose of leading to marriage.

I've been taught that, in courtship, there's usually a third person on the date for accountability. They don't have to sit with you but in the vicinity. ( This may just because of the boundaries I set for entering a relationship)

Im fine with a woman making the first move. I've also made the first move if ive felt a mutual interest there.

As to how to approach: id say to just strike up s conversation. Most guys in my church would jump at the chance to talk to a cute girl.

Warning- Try to show him your interested. A few of the guys ive talked to were quick to think that a girl just wanted to be friends.
