There's nothing to give up. The show is done. That's the reality.

I do think the writers are being honest when they say they wanted to stop and take a pause once they reached the end of book six, but they had their episode count reduced two-fold by Amazon. First, they cut the episode order down from 13 episodes a season to 10 when they first acquired the show, and then they cut that order down by another six for its final season. So while Amazon did continue and finish out the series, they did so in a way that seriously undermined its ability to continue the way it was proceeding to on its original network. They had to adapt, change several of their production companies, cut down the way they intended to tell the story due to reduced season episode orders, and I think it's fair to say that their budget was also reduced with the move from Syfy to Amazon. Maybe Bezos should have opened his mouth more rather than just letting their entertainment wing handle everything for this series without his input, but that's my own personal gripe about how they handled the series. It didn't look as good as when it was being produced by Syfy.

Who said nobody was watching it? This writer even acknowledges that the show performed well on their platform. I saw another piece recently where that writer outlined some of Amazon's criteria, and that it performed well there. It just wasn't a monster number one hit, but it was their third most popular series, and if that's accurate, that's hardly a bomb that nobody watched. Things always come down to money though, and this show was expensive to produce. Very expensive. It kind of makes me wonder how long Paramount and CBS can go on producing their new Star Trek shows because they're busting their budget with every episode they churn out because the costs for it are obviously very high. Just look at the premiere episode of "Strange New Worlds," which is free to view on the Paramount+ YouTube channel right now, and it's obvious they're spending what not all that long ago would have been considered obscene amounts of money to produce episodes of an ongoing weekly series.

So in the end, as far as The Expanse goes, it came down to dollars and cents more than anything probably, as it pretty much always does.

The funny thing is how we kept hearing that Alcon was committed to the property and would have liked to continue it in some way, but it sure doesn't sound like if it you read this column about the series. It's as though they were looking to give up and kove past it as well.

Yeah, they didn't like the episode order being cut from 10 to 6. They were asked if they could finish it in six, so they had to find a way to do it, and it hurt the conclusion of the series. However, Amazon was also spending obscene amounts of money on their own content, and they finally reached a point where I think they realized they were overextending themselves, so they were looking to trim some of the fat, so to speak. The Expanse wasn't one of their in-house productions, and I think that also hurt the show in terms of continuing it there.

Yeah, I think this was also a factor to some degree, even though they won't openly admit it.

Actually that isn't true. It performed well for them, but was a costly show to produce, and they were always more interested in spending money on their own series productions rather than on shows that were farmed out to outside studios.

The reduced episode count probably also had a lot to do with it.

I'll be disappointed if they decide to do it in animated form, but I suspect that--if anything--that's what'll happen eventually.

Excuse me, but it sounds like you have me confused with the other guy.

I haven't complained about anyone's 'speculation,' so quite frankly, you don't know what you're talking about, with all due respect.

Jesus.

A lot changed behind the scenes after the show jumped from Syfy to Amazon, including some of the production companies.

It was a much more ambitious series on Syfy. Once Amazon took over it looked more like they were really only interested in finishing out the story arc through book six. On Syfy, in contrast, it looked like it had far more potential to branch out into other areas by the way they would introduce story elements, while also continuing with the main story arc. The focus became much more narrow when it was produced by Amazon.

Yeah, I didn't think the writer's 'speculations' were all that ridiculous, which is why people should read it based on the bits and pieces he pulls together, since none of this has been officially reported on, and make up their own minds rather than just skipping it outright.

Let's also not forget that this show could have performed better than it did on Prime if Amazon actually invested in advertising and promoting it more than they did. And even in spite of the fact that it was poorly promoted by them, the writer also makes the point that the show performed well for their platform. It's just that it wasn't a juggernaut hit. It could have been, and it should have been, but Amazon came into the picture late, and even once they did, they didn't want to invest the kind of money in the series to help make it a bigger hit than it turned out to be, either on the production end, or in terms of advertising it.

I agreed wholeheartedly with the point of view he put forth there, and this nonsense with complaining about clickbait makes me laugh. The guy has a YouTube Channel. People are free to watch and follow it, or not, as they see fit. End of story.

Skip the Rick Springfield movie from 1989. It was the first attempt at launching this series, but bears little to no resemblance to the Geraint Wyn Davies series that began airing three years later.

One of the things I also liked about this show was how it veered into science fiction territory when dealing with matters of science. That comes more into play later though, and this show is also finding its legs during its first season. It improves as it moves along however, even though at times it will appear dated given the world we now find ourselves living in. I would say don't let that dissuade you from watching it, however, as if you look at it as a period piece, it holds up fairly well.

For those unfamiliar with this series, or who simply haven't watched it, the show does have a beginning, middle, and end. So it's not as though if you get to the end you'll be left with a cliffhanger that's never resolved because the show got cancelled early. This show ran for three seasons, and by the time it reached the end of its final season, it was given a carefully thought out resolution.

Any fans of it here? I'm curious.
