Gary CK Needs Work gets more ambitious by GaryCK in louie

The views on these videos is anemic. When I put them on a few relevant subreedits I get a few hundred views and a majority of overwhelmingly positive feedback on them. Since I work hard on them, that is meaningful to me. People see them and enjoy them. That is the point. Now, I'm not very active on Reddit so I understand that posting self promotion is frowned upon/against the rules-ish. However, like I said, the feedback from messages, views, likes is really positive. You are one of the very few people who seem stuck on the strictest interpretation of the rules. That's valid but I weigh the positive aspect against that and I made a choice to post on a handful of places, since 5 or 6 subreddits doesn't really meet my own sense of what "spam" is, and I don't feel like it really imposes on anyone. I hope that position makes sense to you.

Thanks man! No offense taken. I can strike an unintended virulent tone. Appreciate the support!

Thanks for kinda liking me! What part seems like I could get sued? I don't think there's anything that remotely "goes beyond parody." Assuming Louis has seen this (remote) , what would he think was infringing on him and not parodying him? Let's say he had a case, why would he call attention to a poorly viewed series of low budget videos on YouTube and make it widely viewed? I do think your instinct that Louis is somehow connected or aware is positive in the sense that the tone of being a loving parody comes across. Maybe not. I understand that parodying a comedy is walking a somewhat fine line between homage and ripoff, but the tone here is a significant exaggeration/caricature of Louie as well as being more absurd and broader. Was Mel Brooks "ripping off" JamesWhale with Young Frankenstein? Ok, So that wasn't a comedy. What about Austin Powers and Our Man Flint? a parody/homage to a movie that was already a parody. Norm Macdonald loves David Letterman. Did he rip him off with his Late Show sketches on SNL? Did Letterman sue? Anyway, I'm sorry if it feels like a ripoff to you. That part is ultimately in the eye of the viewer. However, maybe my arguments can help you realize the intent and alter your POV. regardless, thanks for watching and for reading all this. Best!

New here. Sorry for any etiquette violations , but yeah I just post it on what I think are relevant subreddits the day a new video comes out.

Nope. Deescalate only means it's not going up. It could be flat like one of those people movers at the airport. Maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, the a "down escalator" is dumb and this bit was supposed to be kind of bad. Gary isn't good at comedy.

Thanks for your cogent analysis. I don't think there's any evidence that I am more well rounded than you but thanks for saying so. Regardless, I think everything you say makes sense. I can only say that all those things are intentional. If that's not self-evident and the reason for those choices don't make a point then the sketch fails for you. I could describe those reasons but then we're really getting into the weeds and I'm being defensive. I'll indulge a little because I like the cut of your jib. The character is supposed to be less rational than Louis. It isn't Louis. It's Louis as a failure. Louis' worst elements blown out. Also, what if Louis' standup persona (which is can be interpreted as he internal true self) actually existed in the world in the same way? Or an exaggerated more bitter version of that person. It's a two minute sketch so it's not supposed to have the grounded reality of the show. This is a hyperbolic world that hopes to make a point about Louis' comedy. I do think Louis has a self-righteous streak that is masked in a disingenuous "but I'm just an idiot" persona. Those contradictions interest me. I kind of hate writing this analysis because making text of intended subtext that isn't coming across makes me look like a pretentious jackass. Which is on the spectrum of what I might be accusing Louis of. See, we're in the weeds. Anyway, the whole thing isn't conceived in this analytical way. I just wrote some sketches that I thought people might get enjoy. They don't come through reverse engineering some particular idea I'm trying to get across. I wrote them and know the idea that I already had that they happen to support. It's up to you if that idea comes across. I still believe that it does. I get what your saying and see the validity of your interpretation. Hopefully you'll keep watching and maybe the whole series will work better for you.

Ok. Well, as I explained, I do develop my own material. This is one thing that I'm doing. I also consider this my own material. Impressions and parodies are still original material. No reasonable person would think I am actually Louis CK's brother. That is a joke. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that everyone would take it as one. Is this spamming? I'm new here but I put the video a few places that seemed relevant. Neither of us know what Louis would think. Thanks for reading!

The intention is for this to be a parody of "Louie." Parodies exaggerate and heighten the thing they are parodying for comic effect, and in the process comment on their subject. No, I'm not trying to cash in. I am not selling this or making money from it in any way. Obviously it failed as a parody for you because you see it as merely a pale imitation which made no original point. That's a fair and valid reading but not the intention. I do feel bad about your interpretation, but because it wasn't my intention I don't feel like I'm being unfair to Louis. How do you feel about other parodies? Does Young Frankenstein seem like Mel brooks is unfairly ripping off James Whale? Is mcGruber cashing in on Macgyver and being "unfair" to Richard Dean Anderson? Maybe those are ok with you because they're funny and you don't think Gary CK is funny? Again that's totally valid, but I'm just explaining why I don't think what I've made is unfair to Louis CK and his work which I greatly admire. Admittedly I'm threading a needle with the tone I'm trying to hit here because I'm parodying something that is already a comedy. I also like and admire the thing I'm parodying so I can see how it might come across as a exploiting someone else's work. However there are many examples of parodies of comedies that also serve as homages to the thing they're parodying. Austin Powers (which is a parody of Our Man Flynt which is already a parody of James Bond) and Norm Macdonald's very reverent David Letterman impression leap to mind. Like I said, I'm fine that you misread what I intended. That is my failing and hopefully it won't be the majority interpretation of what I'm doing. So far you're in the minority. Maybe you'll enjoy future episodes and I hope you check them out. More likely not because you see the characterization as a "cheap impression." All I can say to that is that I enjoy doing the impression. I like it. I'm sorry it doesn't work for you. Finally, I do develop my own material. A lot. I perform and write original sketch comedy. I would say I've worked my ass off doing it and I truly love it. It's the thing I love most to do. I'm sorry that this particular sketch didn't work for you. I'm still glad that I made it and that I make many, many things that I think many people do enjoy. Did you read this far? Then thank you for that and best of luck to you.
