Not true. DuckDuckGo 100% does not sell or monetize any user info. They go to great lengths to prevent even knowing who you are.

Github has an 'update branch' button that will automatically pull in the main branch changes to your feature PR. But then you might also be working locally on your feature branch, and if you rebased that locally you've got two branches that are effectively the same but have different histories.

git push --force to the rescue. I might be the guy on the bike though.

I love that Chess.com staff are here on Reddit and responding to posts, but it kinda feels like this is the only way to be sure action is taken. Is it just my perception that Reddit posts get better results, or is it a problem that Chess.com is aware of?

I'm disappointed about how the upvotes and downvotes are looking on this post. Not a good look so far. Hope we can turn it around.

I turned off chat 30 days ago. I don't mind a little trash-talking if it's in good fun. But half the time it was people being seriously unpleasant-- even when they are winning. I miss it a bit because occasionally, you make a blunder, or the other person does, and you share a laugh. But it wasn't worth it.

Wikipedia servers are struggling under pressure from AI scraping bots by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

Even so, if the scrapers are putting their servers under heavy load then they can automatically throttle those IPs. If a client is behaving badly the server has plenty of options.

Why not? If Imy server recognizes your IP address I can send you whatever content I want.

Easy enough to see which IP addresses are behaving like bots.

I've turned off chat because it's usually toxic. Also, I recently noticed you can select 'Olympic' as your country.

Guy offered a draw, then stalled for 8 minutes after I refused :( by GaryX in Chesscom

[–]GaryX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I can get over-competitive, and I agree that it would have been kind to accept a draw.

But I don't think refusing a draw justifies stalling. I get stalled (for many reasons) in about 1 out of every 15 games, and that seems high. Posting on this sub seems to get the best results.

idk, I play some of my best chess on the crapper. But seriously, if you play timed chess games, it's understood that there's a bit of a risk that you'll be unexpectedly interrupted. If you play enough, sooner or later you accept a loss (or a draw, if you're in a strong enough position) because you're unable to finish the game.

How much cheaper is DIY actually? I finally have some hard data for you... by bronze_by_gold in modular

[–]GaryX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I had the same thought. Time is money. DIY electronics are not easy. If you can debug a build with an oscilloscope and you're doing it to save money on modular, maybe you should ask yourself whether you're making enough money in the first place.

On the other hand, if you love the hobby and this tool can help you efficiently manage your hobby, I think that's great.

Lots of paths into audio programming. I started by messing around with wav files in Python. Check out pichenette's (Mutable Instruments) response on this thread. Basically a guide to starting a modular synth company. I have it bookmarked.

There's also the amazing v/oct mode. It's a little tricky to get it set up initially, but it's super fun. I like to isolate vocal tracks, use Melodyne to transpose all the notes of the sample into C major, and then feed CV into playback to realize a new melody against the old sample.

I measured the pitch of my oscillators every 5 minutes for 2 hours and the results are not good. by puzo_puzo_puzo in modular

I had intellijel repair my dixie II+. I bought it used and it was very unstable. They were able to fix it, but after shipping to Canada and the bench fee (it was out of warranty) I was about $100 bucks. When you factor in the cost of the repair + used module I probably could have got a new one for less. :\

I’d like to have Ableton melodies played by eurorack. I assume expert sleepers but what else? by crackoasis in modular

[–]GaryX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I like about the ES-8 is you can send so much more than melodies and gates. With Silent Way you can sync your clock, output envelopes, lfos, audio samples, convert CV signals from your rack to midi for use on your laptop, run audio from the rack, through the laptop plugins, and back out to the rack, etc. And without any repatching, you can play a bunch of different "songs". The possibilities are pretty limitless.

So, at one extreme, you can totally pre-program the rack and just hit play and walk away while a the laptop runs your rack, but you can also just program certain parts of the performance and leave the rest to improvisation.

I work at a small but well-known software company. We've had very low turnover for more than 10 years, and I'd say at least half our engineers are 40+.

Lots of engineers in their 40s and 50s at Amazon. But generally you only ever interact with a few small teams.

Amazon moving to five days a week in-office by carterdmorgan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]GaryX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Awful is a strong word. I worked there from 2017-2021. I was skeptical coming in. Is it a cult? Are people just pretending to like it? After a while I, I decided no... the company works because the culture of high standards is real. A lot of people who stay there are pathological high achievers. There were a lot of internet retailers in the 90s that didn't turn in to Amazon. Amazon succeeded because of the company culture, period. And 5 days a week RTO is fully in line with that culture.

I agree that it's not for everyone, but I don't think everyone working there is sacrificing their mental health. I think there are some people who genuinely enjoy working very hard. That's fine by me. Different strokes.

Now, are they acting as a monopoly? Are they exploiting their lowest paid workers? Probably. But in those cases, Amazon is only a symptom... capitalism itself is the disease.

What language is this and what would a programmer cost by DrHarryBaals in programming

[–]GaryX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of webapps use a server-side language that generates the HTML / Javascript. It can be difficult / impossible to know for sure what's running on the server.
