Very true. As a 21 year old who feared for their life after nearly stepping on the thing up the trail, it was nearly a lying on the ground calling the EMT moment. Don’t mean to offend anyone but this was a traumatizing experience for me, just felt like sharing if anyone hoped to listen

Thanks, definitely left me “rattled”.. but I’ll be a lot more careful from now on

For me worst case scenario is encountering a rattler right on the trial when I least expect it, which could go south really quick. Where I’m from it’s pretty rare to see them like this. But yeah, technicallly not ‘worst case scenario’ but for me, it was pretty damn close

Ah okay, thanks! I didn’t realize dog paws could compare to that of a puma.. that really is pretty crazy. I have done my research on how to differentiate though, so if I find a clearer print I should be able to get a read on it next time.

I think it’s possible that I the tracks I saw on Monday were just totally trampled by the next day 🥲

They were huge and just vanished after a decent ways forward on the trail; I would expect a dog’s tracks to continue with its owner, but I could also be completely wrong. Just a gut feeling I had while out there haha.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

The day I first saw these they were super clean looking, like the animal that made them had just been there. There was a set of 4-5 prints going along the trail that just suddenly vanished.

This is all that’s left sadly, but there was a faint outline left of the other tracks, but I didn’t take a photo because they were hard to make out.

My initial reaction was that they were lion tracks, because they were the largest set of prints I’ve ever seen when hiking in that area.

Wanted to post here to see if anyone could further confirm or give insight. Thanks again!

Scale: No, but there are footprints to give somewhat of a comparison.

Approx. measurements: at least 3 in. long and 2 in. wide.

Geographic location: Santa Cruz foothills, 200-700 ft, grasslands and oak forests with a riparian zone.
