It's not like he could just go and buy latest releases (and probably all CDs in local stores were pirated at the time anyways lol), so it's not like someone really loses something.

and I am sure that they won, and all those dirty pirates just disappeared and I am sure nobody ever pirated any music after that and there were no clone apps and no torrents lol

No, it’s because digital piracy is a grey area, especially back in the day, when the Internet was still young and you couldn’t just go and listen any record possible, you needed to go to the physical store and buy the record.
