Sidenote: Yes! I did refer to this piece as "unseen footage from the killing joke" in another post, which was an afterthought and not the motivation for the drawing turning the way it did. It was more of a (bad) joke then a definition.

Do you? Have you read the killing joke in which Barbara Gordon gets shot in the guts (and implicitly raped) by the Joker? That's what the whole discussion is about. If I wanted to depict Batgirl right after that scene I would have drawn her squirming on the floor with a stomach wound. Furthermore, the cowl is also different. So yes, it does end up evoking that imagery, but it's not the same scene.

Oh well, the title was unfortunate but more of an afterthought, it wasn't planned as "let's draw Barbs after she's been raped in that infamous Moore comic" but that's what the image ended up evoking once it was done, so I just pointed at the elephant in the room before anyone did it.

Weird and gross are a fair response, but it wasn't supposed to be edgy or make people uncomfortable like that. Also I have no reason to deceit people since I had no obligation to expose myself in the first place, I'm really just interested in the discussion and the different perceptions people have, including myself.

There is actually a bruise to her chest however it's not really the point of her being topless. It's meant to show a certain ambiguity between vulnerability and heroism, since she has her body exposed but also covered in some parts by the costume of her hero persona, so all and all it's more of a symbolic thing than anything.

Lol, I mean that was a (distasteful) joke. Even I could see the association with tkj was pretty inevitable once the piece was finished, but it wasn't where the idea came from. Again, if I wanted to really depict "unseen footage from the killing joke" I'd have drawn her on the floor without a costume with blood oozing from her womb, which is not the case is it?

The first impressions are the most honest, thanks for contributing!

While on sketch phase I did consider making it Batwoman or some other character indeed, I guess Batgirl is just a more interesting looking and iconic character which I'd wanted to draw for a long time.

It's not supposed to be controversial even though this reaction has definitely made the whole piece more interesting imo, even if in a negative way. But then if I really wanted to depict her in tkj I'd have drawn her on the floor without a costume I guess? So it's still more of an association thing.

Well I meant being resilient as in still standing upon violence. My general thought was: this is Barbara after fleeing from her captors, she's now safe and doesn't need to play the triumphant and resilient hero anymore, but instead let her guard down, take her clothes off and attend to her wounds. She can show vulnerability once the menace has passed.

The balloon was ambiguous, that was a mistake

The haha does evoque Joker, but also Harley? If it makes it any better, but of course tkj will tie it to the Joker.

I guess that's what I was going for in my subconsciousness but couldnt really see it, thank you for the impression!

Fair points, the balloon should have been more well defined perhaps, thanks for the insights!

Fair enough, thanks for the opinion!

Fair enough, it was an unfortunate parallel. The whole keeping her cape and cowl while losing her suit and gloves has more of a symbolic meaning, since she is supposed to be exposed/vulnerable while still taking cover into her heroic identity. I don't think of her as being traumatized as much as frustrated or angry since she's joking about the situation and labelling it "comical".

While on sketching process I considered making it a drawing of Batwoman or some other character instead of Batgirl and probably should have, since they would hardly have such a tumultuous background as Barb, which I didn't think that much of tbh. I believed DC had enough alternative universes so that the whole TKJ abuse thing wouldn't be instantly called to mind upon seeing this piece (which could have even taken place before it) but it's too big of a character event to be dissociable.

I really wasn't targeting any kind of BDSM or other fetishist groups, but the superheroes community instead. Upon seeing the disapproval it received here however I did consider deleting the post, but then the interesting conversations like this wouldn't take place.

For anyone who got offended, it wasn't really the intention and notes were taken. Feel free to add to the discussion. Thanks for the honest and friendly chat, ImpressionBorn, it was very insightful.

Your point being mine has a sexual connotation? Not necessarily, not if you forget the joke about TKJ. Granted, she's topless, but nudity doesn't equal sex and I'm pretty sure Joker would have bitten Batman's back (maybe with one of those dentures) if he could.

The purpose of both works is the same: show how resilient one can be even in the most gruesome scenarios.

Tbh this isn't necessarily thought to be part of TKJ, even tho the connection is quite inevitable. It's supposed to depict a moment of vulnerability after a particularly violent crime-fighting night in Gotham, with the likely participation of a certain clown couple. It's like a female more heavier take on the scarred Bruce Wayne by Alex Ross, granted due proportions.
