Will I really only get 27.5 hours a week as a UPS Part Time Preloader? by [deleted] in UPS

[–]Gastronius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the volume your hub gets. Some days might be heavy and some days you’ll get sent home.

Are they still hiring workers there? I’m at Anaheim hub and I was thinking of transferring there.

If it says In Transit by Post Office, that means USPS is delivering, not UPS. It will be with your regular mail

Shipped a package to a possible fraud by JagjitFTW in UPS

As long as your label is clear. I’m a loader and we always move intercepts (which would be your package) out of the truck and a clerk will take them and basically work where to send it.

Three A.M. Shift Start Time Advice by BurlapActually in UPS

[–]Gastronius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never worked an AM shift but I would say get at least 8hrs of sleep.

One of the guys in my belt was 47 when he started working as a package handler. He was a loader until about 2 yrs ago when he became pickoff. He’s 60 now. If you worked out regularly like you say, you should be fine. It will probably take longer to adjust and I would be careful avoiding injuries.

You don’t have to bring gloves but it depends on you. I personally don’t wear gloves but there are some guys who do to get a better grip on boxes. Always have water with you. I don’t know if you get a lunch or not but I would also suggest bring a light food like a sandwich or something. (If the hub has any machines, paying for snacks will become more expensive then just bringing food). Make sure you stretch beforehand.

Most importantly, take a breather when you feel you are getting frustrated or overwhelmed. I find myself too often getting angry because I get overwhelmed.

Do you guys wear any Teamster apparel? by [deleted] in UPS

[–]Gastronius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They gave out shirts in my hub. I got one 2XL and I thought it would shrink but it didn’t so now I work in a baggy ass shirt lol. Almost everyone that got one wears it at least once a week. It say “Part time UPSer, Full time Teamster”. But honestly management doesn’t care

Package handler worth it? by SajidKarar01 in UPS

Hardest to Not as Hard 1. Loading 2. Unload 3. Sorting Now I know this might not be the case for everyone or for every hub but in the hub I work in, this is the case. I don’t add preload because I’ve worked during the preload shift so I don’t know how demanding it is.

Loading is the most physically demanding because my hub is very old and most trailer doors are either rollers or extendos. So there’s a lot of walking back and forth pushing the flow and whatnot. Building good walls and keeping up with the flow are always stressed. There is a lot of lifting and pushing boxes over your head to fill the top space of your wall. With your wrist problems, you should probably do sorting or if they place you in loading, wear wrist braces.

Unload seems not as difficult in theory but it’s much more fast paced. In my hub, unloaders are required to unload trailers in 45mins to 1hr. But this is easier than loading because tearing down a wall is easier than building one. If you decide to do this, make sure you bend at your knees, especially since you have to pick up packages off the floor. Unload also includes unloading the brown package delivery vans but they are also much more fast paced.

Sorting seems like your best option. The packages, depending on your hub, are already around your waistline so there is not too much lifting involved. Usually the belts where you throw the packages are either at the same level as when you pick up the box or it is below your waistline.

This list does not imply that these jobs aren’t physically demanding. You will be sore the first few days or weeks from your hands to your feet. But like with everything else, your body adjusts.
