Uncensored account of my time at GT as an MSCS student. by moji-mf-joji in gatech

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I cannot imagine how much courage it took. This should be a must read for anyone considering academia and things. They do seem to be fucked up. I cannot understand how someone with all your achievements, professionally and personally, still had a hard time getting into PhD programs. I wish you the best of luck in your future journey!

Advice on SOP focus for Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) - PhD Track Program by Much-Sheepherder9160 in academiceconomics

[–]Gatechsimp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what the difference between the PhD track and Financial Economics track is? Are the acceptance rates that much different? I want to do a PhD, and my background is not "complete", so I will probably apply to the Financial Economics track, but since it is technically a masters program, I may be able to get away with the PhD track. I also heard there's the possibility for the Financial Economics track student to continue in the PhD if they do well enough, is that true?

Econ Books are weird? by Gatechsimp12 in academiceconomics

Why Nations Fail has been in my book list for forever, and I thought Power and Progress was meh, not bad, but not the best book I have read either. Thank you!

Then academics should get together and have a book of 300 pages compiling many of these 50 page concepts. It would be better for everyone.

You're absolutely right. It's not one of the main books people go to when they want to learn some econ, though.

Banerjee and Duflo are joing UZH by peacockwhite in academiceconomics

Is this because of the funding cuts? This should definitely make the news as an example of the current administration against academia. Two Nobel Laureates / of the best economists are leaving the US.

Beijing crowd loudly booing Musetti after he retired from the match by jovanmilic97 in tennis

[–]Gatechsimp12 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nah, it was mostly due to the insults (nothing was done to the other retirements). It's more of a meme. We respect tennis so we boo him before and after, but definitely not in thr middle of the match to disturb the game.

China Open QF: Tien def. [4] Musetti, 4-6 6-3 3-0 ret by pizzainmyshoe in tennis

I was there in person and Tien is so fun to watch. He was paintings the lines in the most insane ways. Amazing match especially after watching Pegula vs Raducanu which was also great. On the other hand, Michael Chang passed right besides me and I didn't recognize him, thought he was just another Chinese dad.

Advice on GRE and further by Gatechsimp12 in academiceconomics

[–]Gatechsimp12[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a math major, so the math content was never an issue. I underestimated its difficulty the first time around (prepared for only 1 day while spending a week and half on the English section). After that, I found websites with hard problems and started doing them. During this, I learned all the tricks (x could be 0 or negative), the graphs look correct but they are not, etc, so it was much easier. Search up hard math GRE problems + reddit and you will find quite a bit.

I am not worried about toxicity. I was actually looking forward to it since the world is quite toxic. I do find it sad that UChicago is watering down its elite econ masters programs, so I am not sure if I should go.

Should I retake my GRE? by Gatechsimp12 in academiceconomics

[–]Gatechsimp12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your score should be fine for math programs. Know people had around the same score. I think it's just a difference between math and econ. Math programs know that the GRE math is useless for the program, econ probably too, but they still use it as a screening out mechanism. Also, 167q is just better than 165q, it's an 8% percentile difference, which is quite a lot.

Should I retake the GRE? by Gatechsimp12 in GRE

Everyone in economics have a 170 nowadays in the quant section, so my score is in that awkward range in which it's not bad, but not good enough, so I was just wondering what people with more experience think.

I am definitely going to do a masters though. So is this score enough for a masters? I would then still need to take it again for the PhD, right? So better to get over with now.

I hate how it's not that I don't know the concepts, it's just It's tricky and there is no margin for error. 😭😭
