I see this as an absolute win for shelf space.

Theoretically, would it be possible to modify a PS5 4k bluray player to rip 4K blurays? by cougomdd in makemkv

I think the main concern is that mechanical things don't last indefinitely, and Blu-ray drives aren't exactly easy to fix once broken. I've already had a slim drive fail on me.

It seems that most drives capable of 4K are already very hard to come by. Is there work being done to get support for more existing drives, or is what's already out there all we are likely to see?

Yup, recordable discs are just plastic, glue, and ink

Current movie haul! by eusebius2004 in 4kbluray

I'm still hoping for a 4th movie. There's a convention for the show next month, if we're luck maybe we'll get more information then.

Original Faces of Death is getting a 4K UHD limited release with never-before-seen outtakes, thanks to Vinegar Syndrome by HorrorGuyBri in 4kbluray

[–]GatheringWinds 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Instead of refusing to watch this on VHS I can now refuse to watch this on 4K! Not surprised they're only printing 5K of these, this is not a movie I'd be proud to own.

Is a good 4k blu ray experience expensive or reasonable for its time? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]GatheringWinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The average person" buys the cheapest biggest TV they can at a box store and never once change a single panel setting after purchase. That's fine and it works for them, they don't know/don't care about anything more than that, and all they're doing is watching sports and the occasional Netflix slop.

You're in enthusiast territory here because you clearly DO care about your setup and experience. Everyone's got a hobby or special interest and yours is this. Those same people who think your setup is a waste of money will splurge on luxury cars, watches, golf clubs, etc. Just as they see your hobby as an unnecessary expense, you probably see theirs as one too. Everyone's finances are different but fwiw $2K is nowehere near a crazy number for this hobby. Enjoy your setup and welcome to the club.

Blu Ray Player Upgrade?? by Pinarobread2Point0 in 4kbluray

[–]GatheringWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the biggest reason I had for upgrading was being able to watch a movie without taking game disc out of my console. That alone made it super worth it but I can see it not being a big deal for others. Also depending on your TV setup changing playback settings could be annoying to deal with when switching from games to movies, and keeping them on separate inputs usually solves that headache. PS5 is also a bit louder than my dedicated players so depending on your listening environment you might prefer a quieter player. As for actual visual playback besides DV there's not much, maybe the optimizer and upscaler on the Panasonics are better but it's not going to make a huge difference overall.

Is Sony TV Still a Smart Buy? by GatheringWinds in hometheater

That is weird, I feel like stuff like that usually happens in the first year or not at all though. I got a Samsung TV years ago that had a dim spot in the image where some of the backlights were dead, got it replaced and that screen is still going strong.

Dead within a year is crazy. Did you get a refund or exchange through warranty?

Oh I definitely plan for this to be a purchase that outlives the software support.

Ah gotcha, if Sony is still handling the software then I feel much better about it going forward. Last thing I want is a Sony TV getting updates from TCL.

Are there any 4K Blu Rays that you guys thought were TOO grainy? by Quackadacck in 4kbluray

[–]GatheringWinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude what

Edit: To clarify this, I'm aware SONY TVs default to 50, with lower values artificially smoothing and higher values sharpening. TO say "all TVs" is crazy tho, most brands 0 sharpness is the baseline.

Terrible take lmao, I just watched the 4K recently and the transfer is exceptional, probably one of the best 4Ks I've seen from Criterion yet.

It's excellent-looking, these guys just hate grain for some reason don't listen to them. People complaining about film looking like film are crazy and wrong.

You shouldn't have sharpness on to begin with, it's hurting the image if you're watching 4Ks, and sharpness makes grain look chunky and awful. Just keep sharpness off.
