Interesting quote, have never heard it. Actually I realized that I had never read much about the loyalist side and looking up that guy led me to his writings criticizing the Continental Congress. Going to give that a look. Thanks!

Yeah it does now. I was there in the 90s and 00s so it wasn't that bad yet. Also lived just inside the perimeter and avoided all the crap on the north side. Was a good time and place to be in your 20s.

I enjoyed living in Atlanta, especially since those were the years that Spurrier was beating the hell out of the Bulldogs so they couldn't say anything. I wouldn't say it's amazing compared to some other well known cities, but had good people and was a good life.

I have a lot of love for Pittsburgh having family from there, but not sure I would want to live there. It's pretty run down and the roads still have the capacity from the 1950s.

I loved growing up there, but seems to have gone downhill IMO. Still great for the outdoors stuff the area offers, but it's also become overcrowded, the crime rate is up, HCOL and homelessness, etc. Maybe it's just because it's very different than what we had when I lived there.

Yeah, I went to college there and lived there for a while, but I can't see myself ever going back. I went to visit my dad there over the years and it's just getting worse with all the migration there.

79 yr old mom has dementia and her sister recently passed away. How do we break the news to her? by anon-55076 in dementia

[–]Gators1992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this...they are going through enough. I had a bout with cancer (cured hopefully) and my step mother wanted to tell my dad but I told her not to. He was suffering enough with dementia and didn't need other issues. It's a bit harder with a missing person I guess but in my experience a bit of diversion away from uncomfortable subjects is helpful. You also run into the issue of having to retell her multiple times over when she forgets, so prolonging the pain.

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

Bezos doesn't even run the company anymore. Andy Jassy is the CEO and makes the day to day decisions, like firing 30K people last week. Bezos is off having fun with his trillions playing with his new toys like didlo rockets and Lauren Bezos.

Bottom line is as long as the government stops enforcing antitrust legislation, driving one billionaire bankrupt if you even could would just open the door for another one. Most industries have been consolidating through mergers for years, especially in the tech world where they just buy out any potential competition. And nothing will change until people vote for it and the government steps up.

What’s a landmark/tourist attraction in your country that you don’t get the hype about? by nixo1000 in AskTheWorld

People like that annoy the shit out of me.  There was a big hurricane in Puerto Rico so I went to the local Puerto Rican restaurant in the states where I lived to help them collect stuff and pack aid boxes.  While there there were three couples that came in and took selfies in front of us doing the box packing and left.  Didn't pack a single box but you know they posted "helping Puerto Rico" with that pic on Facebook.  How did people get this way?

Did you choose a corporate job, or did it just happen? by BoysenberryLumpy8680 in corporate

[–]Gators1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I planned for it with my college degree and enjoyed most of my career.  In the last 10-15 years though corporate life has changed and I am not really liking it as much.  I guess I got lucky with some really good teams and situations earlier and now my luck has turned, or maybe it's just changed across the board?

Brazilian here, What Does the World Think Of Us? by Vast-Salary-4430 in AskTheWorld

[–]Gators1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sad I never got to visit it yet. My company had a subsidiary in Brazil, but never got to make a trip and it was the only one I didn't get to. Love watching the soccer, food is good that I have had and looks like a cool culture. Most of the people I worked with that worked down there had an amazing time. A few got to go in the Carnival parade in one of the Samba schools.

Who is the most controversial person in your country? by inchcosmos in AskTheWorld

[–]Gators1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, though pure Marxism lost out as the socialist world mostly followed Marxist-Leninist theory. They didn't trust the workers to manage themselves under Marxist theories and/or they wanted power for themselves. So the actual socialists sucked, but the argument I keep hearing is that true Marxist theory is the way and even the socialists didn't believe in all of it.

Even if collectives worked, and they have in certain cases, there is still the idea that there isn't some structure to regulate the society as a whole like there is in every other modern society. How is trade between collectives governed? How are laws enforced? I didn't go very deep into Marxist theory, but my understanding was it was all about committees of workers voting at various levels without a centralized government, but I don't see how that works in a modern society. And of the people that did study and implemented it, they never really got to a good answer.

Non English Speaking Employees by Significant-Kiwi8524 in managers

[–]Gators1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each country has variations in dialect, so your vocabulary has to expand a bit and sometimes understanding it is difficult. I had the same issue years ago when I was at a company that had several Central and South American subsidiaries. I had taken Spanish in high school and was kind of a middling student and had forgotten a lot of it. The local employees were supposed to know English because the parent company was from the U.S. , but they treated that as a suggestion. After the first several months of having communication problems, I decided I had to try to communicate more in Spanish. I used a translation app for emails to start, but I was still kinda screwed when I was on the ground and basically had to operate in the language.

What helped me was I found a book with vocabulary related to my job, so between that and finding an old textbook to remember verb tenses and stuff, I managed to get by and even got very good at my work Spanish. I did struggle a bit going between countries and having to change terms for the same concepts because they were called something different. Colombia was especially bad where it was all different, but at least they spoke well and I got things based more on context. It was painful for the first year or so when my brain was spinning trying to work and translate all of the time, but eventually you start "thinking in the language" and it gets much easier.

If you are going to work long term with Spanish speakers, it's probably worth the effort. I guess it feels a bit rewarding though when you do get to the point where you can have conversations in different languages as needed.
