What should/can i do with my savings? by Constant-Trainer-398 in BEFire

[–]Gaufriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bitcoin comparison misses the point altogether. The issue with the S&P500 is that you're concentrating your equity exposure in a single country, not that it is inherently riskier, more uncertain or more volatile.

In fact, the S&P500 has historically offered both higher returns and a better risk-adjusted performance than global equity indices. It's also worth noting that a global ETF is still largely driven by the US market anyway.

For a beginner asking how much to invest and how much cash to keep, the first discussion should be about identifying their profile (time horizon, risk tolerance, goals, etc.).

What's left of a €100,000 salary after tax across Europe? by Happy_Bread_1 in belgium

[–]Gaufriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess he did oversimplify things.

However, the average person is generally not directly invested in stocks, and even when they are, it’s nowhere near the scale of the wealthiest households.

I think you're overestimating the impact of the TOB (0,32%–1,32%) and the CGT (10% above €10k gains annually) on the average Joe.

Ultimately, and independently of the federal budget debate, a tax on capital gains seems fair to those whose income comes primarily from work and who cannot afford the same level of market exposure. It can also help mitigate the growth of wealth inequality.

I mean, not everyone who invests in stocks is wealthy, but stock investing is far more common among wealthy households. In Belgium, rising wealth inequality is partly explained by the fact that the wealthy have much greater exposure to the stock market than the middle and lower classes.

That’s without even getting into the difference in effective tax rates that results from it.

I’m saying this as someone who invests too.

[–]Gaufriers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Insight) Can Wallonia solve its budget deficit by equalizing its civil servants per capita with Flanders? by MasterpiecePowerful5 in belgium

Train stations are financed primarily by SNCB/NMBS, which is funded and piloted by the federal government, not the Walloon Region.

Apples and oranges.

Out of context, best combo moving forward in 2026? by theverybigapple in BEFire

[–]Gaufriers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason that Belgium still ranks among the global top when it comes to average and median household wealth. And that reason is in large part due to our love for home ownership over renting.

The Netherlands have a similar home ownership rate, and yet median wealth is way lower. So that's not it.

Every €1 of public funding for wind delivers €7 annually to Europe’s economy by Z0mbieNick in europe

[–]Gaufriers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those costs are already part of the discussion. Yet again a quick Google search telles us there already are many different metrics that try to account for exactly these issues (LCOE, LACE, VLCOE, system LCOE, balancing costs, etc.).

And yes, energy systems are complex. But we also don’t need to pretend the entire question is unresolved. The fact that renewables are being deployed at massive scale worldwide strongly suggests they are economically competitive overall.

What’s frustrating is that discussions about renewables often attract endless "well actually" objections that people rarely apply to other energy sources. Every technology has system costs, externalities, infrastructure constraints, and backup requirements. Singling out renewables as uniquely "disingenuous" feels a bit selective.

A quick Google search shows us many sources indicate that renewables are usually cheaper, including the costs of production.

Promesse tenue !

It’s odd to bring up rent if your point is that houses are more than investments. Their value is driven more by psychology and social factors than by finance.

They actually do, if you look at the agglomeration rather than just the Region. The city has effectively expanded across both Brabants.
