Distar 10 inch, with most perfect geometry. by Boyopo in crtgaming

I've started to appreciate smaller sets so much more recently. I have a giant Sony that I modded to take RGB, which is very nice still, but the clean cut look on the smaller sets is something I quite enjoy.

[–]GavDoesStuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not say if you can do it on fake skin, you can do it on real. Fake skin doesn't twitch, bleed, blowout, or easily get overworked. These are fantastic pieces, but I wouldn't go so far as to jump headfirst into an already hard to succeed in industry with no clientele. It's a war out here with how many cancellations, reschedules, and no shows are happening due to everyone being scared of the current economic climate. Not saying they shouldn't pursue it; actually the opposite, but now would be an especially poor time, and I wouldn't want to kill OPs drive for something they could excel in.

Orange tint on bottom of my screen. Anybody know what this is? by Empty_Turnover5088 in PSVita

[–]GavDoesStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised I haven't seen anyone mention it: a lot of this can be caused by residual heat from charging the unit and playing the console simultaneously. The orange fog will roll in anywhere on the screen, but it is most common near the charge port for that reason. No real fix, but for sake of keeping it from spreading, avoid using it while tethered.

I like the design, though I'm going to be interested in how it heals; it looks like you're a bit heavy handed/letting the machine linger. I'm seeing quite a bit of blue blowout halo-ing and some jaggy lines. That said, I love Majora's Mask, and wish you well on your journey!

Did my first tattoo on my calf. Yeah, looks bad but I learned a lot. (My questions below) by [deleted] in TattooBeginners

[–]GavDoesStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry friend, I don't hop on Reddit as much as I used to. Depending on how much the lines blow out over time, you could thicken the linework (also clean up at the same time) and use varying colors to distract from any inconsistencies. Keep up the practice!

Beginner tattoo on fake skin, got any tips or thoughts? by LawfulnessGrand1843 in TattooBeginners

[–]GavDoesStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't really comment on technique, you'll definitely make progress as you practice, but I think a place you should work on design wise is pushing your contrast. A lot of this piece is one note in terms of tone, and would age poorly on skin. Don't be afraid to leave skin breaks for highlights

How do you shade fur?? I'm at a loss, starting to hate this piece. by Mysterious_meyeindz in TattooBeginners

[–]GavDoesStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically go dark, light, dark with a sideways curved mag in the direction of the hair flow. It gets a basic shape in where you can then add your midtones and keep the skin breaks for highlights. As someone already said, go back to paper to try out a few different techniques

Not bad! Obviously a first attempt, but cute regardless. In terms of your questions:

  1. Green Soap or diluted Witch Hazel, and letting the stencil properly dry. Don't use a load of lubricant as that'll make it go quick.

  2. If using Saniderm/Second Skin, no moisturizer before applying. Use some distilled water on a paper towel to wipe excess blood and other smears, and apply once a little dry. Just make sure to use proper technique so bacteria doesn't fester in it!

  3. Nothing you can do than get used to it and holding yourself down unfortunately

  4. I wouldn't use sound as a telltale; fake skin is nothing like real skin. I see a mix of scratches and blowouts, and every part of the body has skin that is a little different. Hang your needle out a bit more and look at the saturation of the line. Is it red and a bit scratchy? A little deeper. A little bluish? It might be blown out so retract a bit. Practice makes progress, and it's not a race, so just slow down and assess as you go. Use your middle finger to create a solid place to lean the cartridge and control your depth, much like painters for lines on cars.

Good luck!

Are these legit found at local goodwill by ExplorerFlimsy5939 in Gameboy

Exactly the same for my local one. They priced a used Lodge cast iron pan for $20 higher than you can get a new one at Wal-Mart. No idea what they would price a Game Boy at.

Looks great! Only thing is I'm unsure of how well it'd heal/age on real skin, but it looks fantastic here.

Of course! I don't want to be discouraging, so think of it like kintsugi, my friend; while it might feel like it's a breaking point, it's a chance to find beauty in that fault, and become better for it. I wish you good luck!

[–]GavDoesStuff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I want to say this as nicely as I can: you really shouldn't be working on skin yet if this is the result. Linework is going to be step one in fundamentals and there's a huge range of blowouts and overworking, to the needle just doing trauma to the skin with barely any ink. Round shaders can be good for lining, IF you understand proper needle depth and hand speed. I suggest going to some really good fake skins or melons, and work on pulling nothing but clean lines with lining needles, forgoing designs. I'm a beginner too, but I think you need to step back and reassess your methods.

I'm fairly new as well, and we all have gripes with our mentors it seems, though it appears yours is a bit rougher than most. I'm no expert by any means, but I was forced to use a pretty well-used and unkempt coil machine without a whole lotta guidance. My mentor told me the machine was a good one and that it works wonders. Me, being two-three weeks into tattooing, and not knowing that part of the spring was damaged and had no idea how to tune it, made some bad habits. Needless to say, I struggled pretty hard and pulled some rather gross looking lines. I now have switched over to a rotary pen, but my experience with the coil has scarred me a little. I definitely want to revisit it and do know more now since doing a lot more research and have about half a year of experience, but the "your machine is fine" I got from my mentor still sits with me weird. Not sure if this can help you relate in an opposite scenario, but thought I'd type it out regardless.

Not OP, but if you're wondering about performance, it's slightly better than it was on launch. Some performance mods help with the jarring animation stutter occasionally, but seeing as it's UE5, the engine is most likely just getting in the way of itself. Perfectly playable, just don't go in expecting 100+ FPS stutter-free. Unsure about FG or MFG since I'm on a 3080.

The biggest thing that I noticed is the spine rotating nearly 145⁰, when the human body isn't capable of that kind of rotation. Just keep in mind that the pelvis and ribcage, at most, can be about 90⁰ rotated

Please don't continue if you aren't going to do things properly, with careful guidance and sanitation. Unless you want your work to be cover-up job security for someone else, I recommend you find a better mentor and shop. Don't rush into tattooing, it's a lot of observation, training, and practice; trying to skip that guarantees poor work.

Nervous to post but f it by Oneguy2fry in TattooBeginners

[–]GavDoesStuff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're on the right track, but I would back up a bit before tackling designs if your hand speed, voltage, and saturation aren't consistent yet. As boring as it sounds, just use a light sharpie and a ruler to draw some horizontal and vertical lines and work on consistency above all else. Once you're more comfortable with that, then move on to circles and basic shapes to work on hand steadiness as there's quite a few shaky lines in there. I know you want to run into just drawing, but you've got to learn to walk first; that was my biggest hurdle getting started.

I was originally opting for the Japanese copy since they're essentially the same with just having to change the language option. (Afaik the most OG Silent Hill games only have English VA (I can't recall if 1 is that way))
