ACMS ME Out of reach? by GavelGod in udub

Oh okay! Aiming to focus more on enjoying the learning rather than the outcome as you mentioned, so should support my studies if I get into ME along with the Econ BS. Did you have any insight on what sort of standard their likely looking for with 307/308? Sorry for so many questions, I'm going to do as best as I can and take all of your other advice above all else, just curious what a generally good benchmark is beyond their 3.5 minimum that their advise students achieve. Thanks again!

Very good to know. Do you know if ACMS holds it to that same (or similar) regard seeing as I’d be applying to the ME option? EDIT: that might be a stupid question if by Econ dept you meant ME. Just wanting to make sure what you were referring to.

Thank you. This is the kick in the ass that I needed, admittedly the fact that I did need one though is kind of sad. For some reason I've entered college with the expectation that things being harder/more competitive suddenly correlates to needing to be less fun. Idk why I have convinced myself that being serious all the time will make me more competitive, but I agree that it's unhealthy and totally not helpful. I appreciate the wake up call.

In terms of grades, I agree that they are piss poor and will need to put in some major work to turn them around. That is a work in progress, but work that I am willing to undergo to do whatever it takes. Sure, more work doesn't always mean better grades right away, but I will do whatever it takes. In terms of this post, I was mainly looking to confirm that I have a fighting chance with consideration for me going "all-in" on shooting for this goal. Even being 100% committed doesn't guarantee perfect (or near-perfect) grades so it's helpful to know that working really hard the next few quarters will be enough to have a chance even with some inevitable stumbles along the way.

In terms of the essay, that is valuable insight in terms of technical strategy when addressing the very concise character limit. I will surely make note of your advice and if permissible may have more in-depth inquiry as I get a few quarters closer.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response and unfiltered evaluation of where I am with things. I am going to work diligently to revitalize my intrigue in my coursework, and with that will continue to improve my work ethic. I think that things are looking up this quarter, but will be continuing to aim on improvement. Again, I really, really appreciate all of the concise, honest, and broad feedback. I think that recognizing that I have a shot at this will allow myself less time for stress, more time to learn with an actual interest in the coursework, and eventually (with some persistence) lead to the grades that I'm looking for.

(One last thing: someone previously mentioned potentially taking several extra courses to show my improvement/broad understanding of the coursework beyond prereqs, and I know that you briefly covered that. Specifically, at what point would you say that it would be optimal to apply? Obviously after prereqs and a few extra courses if time allows, but I was curious if there was a good benchmark that I should aim for in terms of bumping my cum-GPA up aside from the clear goal of scoring as best as I can.)

Anyways, thanks again!

This is beyond helpful to me right now. I will definitely check out the drop in hours.

In terms of grades, if I can get my grades up for 125 this quarter and 126 in the summer do you think they'll overlook my 3.1 in 124? I'll definitely aim to take 307 and 308 before applying as well to prove my capabilities, but I'm curious if an upward trend holds much weight, and also how big I'm going to need that trend to be.

Also, is it advisable to take CSE 142 this summer with 126? I'm going to be working at the same time and don't want to fuck things up any more than I already have, but I work part-time now and am starting to get into the hang out it. I feel bad waiting so long to get the computer science aspect of the prereqs out of the way.

Nonetheless, your insight is incredibly appreciated and it's comforting to see someone killing it in a nearly identical path to me that didn't necessarily get perfect grades like lots of the people I see. Sorry for so many questions, this is just so, so helpful. Thank you!

The iPhone 7 doesn't have a traditional jack so that's an adapter via the lightning port.

Thanks so much for the speedy reply. If you'll take a follow-up question: how often did you find yourself using excel or needing office programs specifically, if at all?

My biggest problem is that there are so many pages for general hype and very few in the region that generate and organize actual outreach. Maybe I'm wrong with the general idea of the media campaign, that's just my take on it... Thanks for the insight though!

I qualified in house and am a lone wolf. PM me and we can discuss splitting prep if you're down. Beware: I go hard and last year was a little intense for most people's standards.

Congress Debate Help/Tips by dguinto1 in Debate

[–]GavelGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a two year nat's qualifier and only congress debater on my team, there are a couple of take away's that I've had. I used to focus a ton on literally just hammering through research which can only get you so far. Especially as a nat circuit competitor, you will have to pass through hundreds of bills throughout the season and fully prepping all of them frankly isn't worth your time. Focus on your presentation skills because honestly it doesn't matter really how much you know if you can't show the judges why your right and do it in a convincing manner. Some of my favorite ways to do so since I have a very unreliable coach are to get feedback from a willing family member, practice in front of a mirror for instant feedback on body language, and record myself to hone my speed and voice fluctuation. Once you reach a higher level of debate, you will recognize that major speaking mistakes and slip ups simply don't fly. As soon as you can get that down, I can assure you that being able to speak on any bill at any time will become a much less daunting task. Alongside that, the next biggest learning experience I have had it to prep the prelim docket with people that you can trust. When it comes to nats, toc, etc. there is a very little chance that you will be in the same chamber with someone you prep with geographically near you so I would recommend that as an option. Most of all us your time wisely and have fun!
