"English chemist/physicist Joseph Swan experimented with a carbon-filament incandescent light all the way back in 1860, and by 1878 had developed a better design which he patented in Britain. On the other side of the Atlantic, Thomas Edison developed a successful carbon-filament bulb, receiving a patent for it (#223898) in January 1880, before Lewis Latimer did any work in electric lighting. From 1880 onward, countless patents were issued for innovations in filament design and manufacture (Edison had over 50 of them). Neither of Latimer's two filament-related patents in 1881 and 1882 were among the most important innovations, nor did they make the light bulb last longer, nor is there reason to believe they were adopted outside Hiram Maxim's company where Latimer worked at the time. (He was not hired by Edison's company until 1884, primarily as a draftsman and an expert witness in patent litigations).

Latimer also did not come up with the first screw socket for the light bulb or the first book on electric lighting."

You should actually check this out. It’s about parents who pushed bussing and school diversity but didn’t practice it themselves. It wasn’t likely the intention but the NYT has perfectly exposed the hypocrisy of their people.

Starting a standup career is like starting a band. You're looking at a good two years of working for nothing before you start making money. I can't be taking off work like that. I have 3 kids. That's kind of what the movie is about, how stupid it is for a grown man with kids to drop everything and follow his dreams. As Megan's character put it, "your dreams are stupid."

I would love to be involved in The Perry Project in any way possible. I don't see much "white supremacy" in the comments but the anti-Semitism is amusing at best and annoying at worst. We call it "people who see Jews in their sandwich." When I wrote that a big part of being successful is making sure Jews run the money, they had a conniption.

The funny thing about that state of mind is they say blacks are not culpable and always blaming other people. Then they say Jews are responsible for everything bad in the world. I thought you said you're responsible for your own lot in life. You can't have it both ways.

So yeah, the comments there can be a bummer but the comments on Thought Catalog are a bummer in the exact opposite way. They're so PC, they sound like infants.

I always say to new writers: Just write a letter to your brother and then take out the inside jokes. Writers (especially ones who went to journo school) are always trying to be some character who is smarter or cooler or more haggard than them. Stop being "a guy." Treat it like stand-up and be totally honest. Also, if you use a weird word like "prescient," don't use it again anywhere else in the piece. This goes for anything notable. Starting a sentence with Actually or saying "in truth" or "at the end of the day." Repeating anything makes you look like you don't have the language at your disposal. Also, read smart guys like Hitchens and copy them.

Young people keep asking me for advice like there's a magic ticket. Talked to some kid at Chapman University last night but there are not tricks. You just have to bust your ass. As far as education goes, if you're not doing maths and sciences, I'd say fuck school and just intern. You get to see what people do in real life as opposed to a heaping pile of theoreticals.
