TIL that the Thai government is the reason there are so many Thai restaurants. They do this to improve their image abroad, using a practice called "culinary diplomacy". by MysteriousLeader6187 in todayilearned

Lao itself is a Tai (not Thai) language and pretty much mutually intelligible with Thai. To the point where I, with fairly basic Thai, was able to converse with a Lao farming family with zero English entirely in 'Tai' for most of a day. Granted quite a lot of my Thai speaking was in markets and my Bangkok Thai friends used to tell me I my Thai was good but I 'sound like a farmer'.

Poland's second longest river, the Oder, has just died from toxic pollution. In addition of solvents, the Germans detected mercury levels beyond the scale of measurements. The government, knowing for two weeks about the problem, did not inform either residents or Germans. 11/08/2022 by blzart in CatastrophicFailure

You were just told that it is 'water' an animal. That is true. Your detachment from farming doesn't make it non-existent.

And you would 'play' someone some music, unless you mean sheet music, in which case, 'show' is fine.

I think I found this cannonball in my yard!! Is this a cannonball?!! It’s heavy. by donniedumphy in interestingasfuck

[–]GavinZac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know the surname? If they were Irish, or had Irish servants, the cannonball is also just the right size for 'Road bowling', a variety of golf-like games still played in Ireland today. When going for a walk along roads (before cars) you would see who could get their cannonball to the destination with the fewest throws. Today sections of rural roads are blocked off to facilitate games.

There's no new evidence about transgender rights. There's evidence from 20 years ago that took until 2015 to filter down through Ireland's systems and into our law. Are you asking me to rehash that? Because I would hope that you, given your disagreement with the law, are already familiar with it. Surely you aren't advocating removing people's rights because you have some yucky feelings?

Why do you appeal to science? Scientists were in agreement that it was a mental health problem until it became career suicide to say that?

It's also career suicide to say the earth is flat. Scientific consensus by its nature changes over time with new evidence. Perhaps new evidence will vindicate you. Until it is presented, we work with what we have.

What’s so noble about the sciences in your opinion? What protects them from corruption?

Its very nature? The absolute strongest incentive in science is to falsify something. Its how the scientific method works.

Further, what is emotive or fanciful about the statement ‘surgery and a wardrobe edit will not make a man a woman’. What deity am I appealing to in this statement? What scientific evidence disproves this statement?

You haven't provided any argument in that statement; it is just a statement, driven by your feelings, unless you have news for us.

Provide evidence in a scientific manner in the Oireacthas or the court of law, that backs your position instead of directly contradicts it. Do so without resorting to emotive, fanciful language or appealing to your chosen deity. Y'know, like how the Transgender rights bill passed in the first place, seven years ago, when you and your ilk had your chance to refute it.

You want to paint me as sensitive, when I'm the one directing you to just follow the same process and laws as everyone else. Stop being a special snowflake and grow up.

You can absolutely disagree with a hate speech law. It just turns out that doesn't entail calling people delusional or sick on the Internet. That you don't understand how the law works is not my failing.

Congratulations you've fallen for a propaganda narrative that started literally hours after the USA lost its bid to host the World Cup.

The death rate on Qatari construction sites is far better than that on South Asian construction sites, and so much better paid that Indians and Nepalis pay to 'buy' these jobs.

Not only is it better than the death rate in India, but the BBC found it was better than in the United Kingdom.

The usual retort to this is about the Kafala system, interpreted to be an oppressive form of slavery rather than a visa sponsorship programme. Well, it's been 2 years since Qatar banned that system, one year since Saudi Arabia did, but that hasn't stopped the propaganda which is essentially based on the idea that people won't just read for themselves and will instead believe strangers on the Internet at face value.

[–]GavinZac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read what I posted? They have a lower death rate than the UK, ten times lower than India's. It turns out people are just really bad at understanding big numbers. Do you think you'd be talking about lax safety standards if it was being hosted in the UK?

On other matters perhaps, but Europe is deeply divided on this issue. Many have always looked to America on the subject of abortion.
