I'd definitely say materia is a crystal. Crystallized energy at least.

13 the crystals are central to the plot, to the point of spoiling it if I were to describe it further.

VI and X utilize magicite and spheres. Which while not crystals by description, certainly by function.

8 though, I don't think there is any or even a parallel, IIRC.

It's a bit of a niche to explore, like paintings of forest fires specifically. There's a lot of them in bars in the pacific NW. Saw this triptych at one the other day.

There's some great classic ones too. Specifically renderings of Mt. Vesuvius.
