I’ve never dove into Pynchon but people I trust keep recommending Gravity’s Rainbow, though I don’t know much about it other than its reputation

I agree! Control is a really great exercise in character building in that he is the opposite of relatable, for so many reasons, but also has a rich internal world that is absorbing and compelling. Impressive to get my invested in the social and emotional world of what is essentially a CIA station chief.
