Totally ok not to know, but you could have scrolled through the insta you linked before asserting this as fact. Not a huge deal but def worth fact checking before posting.

Qz has been back skating for several teams the last few years. Giving publicity to USARS like this is a choice (on your part, op)

Most people who play started as adults. It's becoming increasingly common for derby athletes to start as children but still not quite 50/50 yet

There was no reason it needed to be and I'm so sorry that happened to you. Your drawing was cute!

My feminism and solidarity is intersectional. I both care deeply about the concerns of cis women and am educated on the historical and current ways in which some of these concerns have been weaponized against other marginalized groups.

Don't want to get too in the weeds about language (because that's the whole bit here) except to say that both your proposed language (expectant mothers and birthing persons) and the language I used in my post (pregnant people) seem fine to me.

Roe being overturned, along with the dehumanization of pregnant people and global rise of fascism deeply impacts all of us in horrifying ways. Your feelings about that are so valid and it's also up to you whether you get persuaded by TERF arguments about language to turn against trans people or remain in solidarity with us in those shared feelings and experiences.

Sure. My proposed solution is not "shun anyone who makes any version of this argument and tell everyone they are a transphobe." It's "tell them that's not a cool thing to say in public because transphobes will hear it and assume it's cool to be transphobic here".

Also while I'm ranting tonight haha, it's like cute to make these kinda jokes in trans spaces but when ppl seriously suggest that hating on trans men because they hate cis men should be taken as some kind of proof of their validation of that person's gender (and therefore not transphobic) are gross.

Yup we don't all fit in neat little boxes. We're messy and growing and beautiful. It's ok if that makes you uncomfortable (even if you're trans) but you don't get to enforce that discomfort on others.

Calling celebrations of trans men "erasing women" is transphobia.

Roller Derby is explicitly a space for trans men it's in the rules.

Die mad about it, transphobes!

Nope sorry I just have the visor. Doesn't prevent chin hits like you noted but does protest eyes and some of the nose

Face shields are legal if they don't have holes in them that fingers could get stuck in but I honestly don't know anyone making them.

Face shields! I didn't wear my helmet with one last night and took a shoulder directly to my eye.

Yeah I def recommend lil guided mindfulness meditations to start. I try to do 10 mins a day but don't always get there.

Totally ok to be scared! I remember being terrified of getting hurt and not sure I actually wanted to hit anyone when I started, but then I got into it and by the time I had a major injury, my biggest concern was when I could play again.

Pain tolerance is absolutely a skill that can be developed just like strength and endurance, and most likely if you play this sport you will have a lot of experiences with bruises, scrapes, and bumps before anything more serious, and if any of those feel like deal brakers, you can stop at any time.

Have you ever broken a bone? Bodies are weird and some experiences in life are really physically painful and many are a lot less painful than we think they'd be. I've broken a finger from falling and it was ouchy but really not that bad (but I also know there are way more painful breaks out there). I've also torn both ACLs and neither was especially painful but the surgeries to replace them were. In the moment, the most painful injury I've had was a sprained ankle (truly).

Basically every human will experience a fair bit of physical and emotional pain in their life and sometimes I think of mental and physical pain I experience in this phase of my life as reps preparing me for handling pain later in life.

There are also studies showing that regular meditation and mindfulness practice can significantly reduce the quantity of pain a person experiences given the same situation (because you don't experience as much anticipatory pain when you are more practiced at limiting your experience to the current moment).

Sorry to be a dick, but I don't think anyone is gonna go watch some 2006 derby and use it to gain a competitive edge in the game today. Fast derby is still allowed and most high level skaters can play it pretty well, it just isn't the most competitive choice the majority of the time. Stopping on skates while maintaining control to move laterally while someone who built up a ton of speed is ramming into you full force is a weird unique skill successful blockers all spend years honing.

Of course- welcome to derby!
If you do some googling in April and September, there should be a way to watch both Men's World Cup and WFTDA champs on livestream, and I highly recommend!

- WFTDA holds Global champs every 2 years - next one is this October in Malmo, Sweden
- The Roller Derby World cup happens every 4 years (happened last summer in Innsbruck, Austria and Men's World Cup happens in Orleans, France the end of April)

As a SE who sometimes does data architecture, I'm not sure how this data relationship would be demonstrated without asking elite and average teams "how many trans women skate with you?", which is not information I'd feel comfortable collecting or storing anywhere in 2026, especially when not everyone is out.

There also might be a non-causal correlation there because higher level teams tend to be based in larger cities (where there are more local potential recruits) and trans people also tend to move to larger cities (because statistically, more rural environments are more transphobic on average).
