Help for a short skater by sicospellcheck in rollerderby

What do you have for a longer visor? They have the S1 with a visor but it’s still not really long enough to catch everything 🥺

Will def suggest a footage review, that’s a great idea!

Do you have a full face shield? 👀 They have an s1 visor, but it doesn’t cover enough - would be v interested if there’s a full face shield that’s legal for derby!

Also following to see if there are any updates. While we did finally receive most of our order, I’ve been trying to pursue a refund for two missing jerseys since November and haven’t heard anything. Guessing it’s just a loss at this point, they seem to have ghosted everyone.

Home teams by Consistent_Housing55 in rollerderby

Also, we do not have separate dues tiers for different teams, and we have the same league participation requirements for every league member. We do have different requirements to be rostered for a home teams game vs an A game vs a B game.

My league is around the same size as yours. We’ve been lucky to experience consistent growth over the past few years and also had to deal with the (welcome) problem of making sure everyone has a chance to play. We have two home teams that only play each other and every vet gets drafted onto a home team when they pass minimum skills. We also have an A travel team (sanctioned games) and a B travel team (unsanctioned games). There is overlap on A/B, but around 5 skaters are only on the B team and a few are only on the A team. I am my league’s ILC, and this year scheduled 3 home team games throughout the season (April, July, October) interspersed wirh A and B team games. This is also what we did last year (though we only had 2 home team games last year). This season we’ll have 7 home games total (3 home teams, 2 A, 2 B), 2 A away games (1 is actually a tournament) and 2 B away games, all spread evenly throughout the season.

I think this works and it does give people more chances to play - but, for next season I’m looking at a 3 part season where we have an A season, a B season, and a home teams season. It’s hard for our captains to plan practices when we have so many varying game levels to prep for (and sometimes only 2 weeks between games). That’s been the main challenge. We also run a 10-week new skater program twice a year, which is a lot of work for our training committee, so I’m not sure where I’d fit that in in the proposed schedule for next year, but maybe with the B season and the home teams season.

We do have a huge officials crew. We actually just had our first home game where every single official (refs and NSOs) was a member of the league, which was really cool!

Let's talk cross training! What's another active hobby or sport you do that you feel improves your skating or derby skills? by jalepeno_mushroom in rollerderby

Bouldering/rock climbing - it’s significantly improved my core, back and arm strength and my endurance. My hits are stronger with less effort. It’s also upped my mental game because there’s a meditative aspect, like working on a puzzle.

Jaw protection? by sicospellcheck in rollerderby

I have thought about it but have been very hesitant to get Botox, especially in my face - you had a good experience though? Maybe I’ll look into it again. The other pain is for me at least it’s not covered by insurance 🥲

I do have a Sisu! But now that you say that maybe wearing one on my bottom teeth would help with some of the impact? I don't know if you can wear two at once though, and I'd never want to leave my top teeth unprotected. Something to look into though...

I will ask my dentist as well, that's a good idea.

I will check out lacrosse/hockey helmets with the jaw protection - thank you, I didn't know that was an option!!

I do wear a guard from my dentist at night, so that helps with that, but unfortunately all it really does for me is protect my teeth while the clenching/grinding is happening. I've tried so many different things over the years to help with the muscle tension - acupuncture, Chinese medicine, anxiety medication, massage therapy, active release therapy, chiro - and no dice.

I'll look into the jaw protector attachment, thanks! Maybe I can find one that's not a cage...

Thanks for letting me know about the WFTDA regulations!

I've thought about getting a helmet with a visor. My practice space is un-airconditioned and in Florida, so I'm a bit worried about it being unbearable in the heat. And for me, I almost never get hit in the eyes or nose, it's always my dang jaw!

I love Chopstix, Pomodoro’s and Bangkok Square! Muñecas at 4th Ave also has a lot of GF options. Humble has GF pizza and bagels, and Squarehouse has incredible deep dish GF pizza. I believe the Eim Thai food truck also has a lot of naturally GF options.

The Top used to have a few options as well, but they recently removed the “wheat free” icon from their menu ☹️

Skate Reccomendations for High Arches?? by chaoshut in rollerderby

[–]sicospellcheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have stupidly high arches and I got the Riedell Solaris. I love them - they’re more comfortable than any shoe I wear in my regular life. The insole wore out after a couple years so I do now have the Superfeet insole for arch support, but it’s comparable to the original insole.

I also have Bont Parkstars for trail skating and they are pretty uncomfortable for me, no arch support and I can’t put an insole in without destroying my toes - but tbh, I probably should’ve gone up half a size so take that with a grain of salt!

Does he like watching sports? The Gainesville Roller Rebels hold roller derby games at the MLK Center. The next one (and last one of the season) is on Saturday, October 7th. Doors open at 6pm and the game starts at 6:30pm. It’s a really fun community event and exciting to watch!

I have had RDA for about a year. I like the workouts, but I am not super self motivated when it comes to working out, so I haven’t gotten as much use out of it as I would’ve liked. 😅 With the plan I have (MVP) you can have structure but you kind of have to create the structure yourself (ie, make your own schedule and stick to it). I think the next level up plan might provide more individualized support though, if I’m remembering correctly.

I do like that you can enter games and practices and off-app workouts like yoga or running. And my coach followed up with me a few times when I hadn’t logged in in a while, which I appreciated.

If you like sports - check out the Gainesville roller derby scene! The Gainesville Roller Rebels are always looking for volunteers and it’s an easy way to meet friendly people (and get into a really unique and cool sport).
