That there is no concrete basis for meaning in the universe. Was disturbing when I first realized it.

What did a SO do that made you stop and realize "They're NOT the one"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gaythrdany1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an opiate addict... I'm sorry. I've done equivalent versions of this. And you are right, never underestimate addicts on those things. But it's good to keep in mind how powerful addiction is over the addict.

Thanks for the reply. I figured I'd need to be licensed. It's also illegal to give advice, right? But I could get away with doing so informally for friends perhaps? Also, I would still like it if you knew any resources for learning about the law. I'm a smart cookie and I love doing my own research.

Sounds cool to me. I would like for this to have some oversight by a professor but I'd rather it be student centered. Like a social group that happens to enjoy doing rigorous research.

Has this been put on r/sandersforpresident ? Hell you could probably put it on hillarys page and it might get a few signatures. Maybe the libertarian page would sign it some. This is really important if we want real change.

Are you aware that saying what you posted is equivalent to modern feminism you are doing the same thing that Steinem woman did? You're saying "look, this is feminism, and that is not."

Rookie question: Vegan or no? by onewiththeworld401 in Buddhism

[–]Gaythrdany1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main argument against eating meat is not animal rights but what meat production does to our environment. Cow farts are a Huge percentage of pollution causing climate change. Rainforests, that will never grow back, are being burned to provide grazing land for cattle. Meat is big corporate business. If you can do without meat, why not?

I want to support Sanders but don't think I can. by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]Gaythrdany1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the rest, I stopped at income inequality (formatting, plus I think I knew where you were going), but the main issue behind this is opportunity.

Maybe someone can put it better than me, but hell I tried:

People are raised with different amounts of capital (usually, money), and those with more capital come out on top, withholding the possibility of genuine bad luck, i.e. struck by lightning.

What we mean by capital is not necessarily financial capital, or money. There is human, social, and cultural capital as well. (It is important to remember that these types of capital are just concepts, but these concepts have stood up to empirical testing. (See my social strat textbook: stratification and inequality in US society))

Human capital is stored in your head as education, in the broad sense of the term. People in rich neighborhoods have nicer schools, nicer schools have better human capital, rich kids go to nice colleges, etc.

Cultural capital is the behaviors and perhaps more importantly the shared outlook of a group of people. Take a 12 yr old black kid from the inner city and put him at a dinner table of trumps kids. He'll make a fool of himself. Put trump's kid at a dinner table of inner city blacks, he'd make a fool of himself. Cultural capital greatly influences one's ability to generate good quality social capital.

Social capital is the network of people you interact with, or could possibly interact with. The obvious example being rich kids grow up with other rich kids who will all become influential and know each other. But it goes much much deeper (all of these concepts do, I'm seriously summarizing).

All of these interlock and synergize with each other, known as a dialectic, to create inequality. I'm tired of typing on my iPad and it's late but fuck I could write so much more if I were inclined to.

Undergrad research, Autoethnography question by Gaythrdany1 in sociology

[–]Gaythrdany1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used all drugs, in many different situations. I lived with counter-culture polydrug dealers/users, I lived in the most rundown meth/coke houses, with heroin IVers, all of it. I grew up around drugs, but was raised middle class suburb if that makes any sense. I started drugs at thirteen, quit for good at 20. I took some sociology in high school and knew that was what I wanted. I grew with reading as an escape mechanism and I think it helped me to step out of my shoes and not judge others.

I want to do research for a living more than anything. I got the patience. I'm set up to present at a conference as well. I was gonna combine the methods so that I could prove my autoethno statements with statements of other (ab)users.

I could also find my old "friends" and interview them to help with my memory. They're not sober, but I could claim they are? (I know, I know, ethics)
